18641409579Pennsylvania 1864. One-page discharge of a Sergeant of the 58th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. Dated 11/10/1864 and signed in black ink by Hayes. In Good condition overall with moderate age toning and wear along creases. Bottom third is currently mended with archival tape. Shelved at Rockville Room E MW Box. Isaac Israel Hayes 1832-1881 was an American physician Arctic explorer and author who combined scientific ambition with public service. After earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania he gained national attention as surgeon on Elisha Kent Kane's Arctic expedition 1853-1855 and later led his own 1860-1861 voyage toward the North Pole aboard the schooner United States. During the American Civil War Hayes served as a Union Army surgeon and later as a medical examiner for the draft in New York applying his medical expertise to military and public health needs. Following the war he remained active in civic life serving in the New York State Assembly and writing extensively about Arctic exploration helping to sustain American interest in polar science in the decades before the great expeditions of the late 19th century. 1409579. 18970012415Ottawa Ontario Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1897. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter written hand annotated and signed by Canadian Minister Israel Tarte. Dated September 6th 1897 this letter is on a letterhead from the Federal Minister of Public Works office in Ottawa written by Tarte in regard to a dispute between lumber and agricultural interests and suggesting he will attempt to work out a solution with some handwritten edits to Cambridge Member of Parliament Duncan Graham 1845-1934 who had just won a by-election in 1897 to Parliament his only term after a contested vote count in the 1896 Laurier landslide. Original postmarked Ministry-embossed envelope accompanies with initials J. I. T. and some anachronistic pencil writing present. Israel Tarte was a notary journalist newspaper owner and politician. Tarte came to prominence as editor of several newspapers Le Canadien L'Evénement La Patrie and the Quebec Daily Mercury. He was a Minister under Wilfrid Laurier. "The four elements that made him what he was - a francophone Catholic Canadian and British subject - sometimes led him in politics to try to square the circle." DCBThis letter measures 8 x 10 inches and includes an envelope 5-¼ x 4-¼ inches. Both items have clear crisp embossing though the letter shows signs of ink transfer from folding. The letter is age-toned with some browning edges and creases from original folds. The condition is Very Good. The envelope is torn from opening and shows signs of age-toning staining and wear. "Die Entdeckung des ersten Vertreters des Genus Actinomyces reicht zurück bis ins Jahr 1877 als der deutsche Veterinärmediziner Otto Bollinger bei einer chronisch-destruierenden Entzündung in Kiefer und Zunge eines Rindes kleine harte Körnchen "Drusen" feststellte welche aus filamentösen pilzartigen Strukturen bestanden Bollinger 1877. Der Botaniker C. O. Harz bestätigte 1877 die mikrobiologische Herkunft dieser Strukturen und benannte sie auf Grund der radiär-strahlenartigen Anordnung der Strukturen Actinomyces "Strahlenpilz" von griech. aktis: Strahl; griech. mykes: Pilz bovis Harz 1877. James Israel beschrieb 1878 eine ähnliche Erkrankung beim Menschen Israel 1878. Der kulturelle Nachweis misslang allerdings bis 1889 Bujwid erste Erfolge bei der Anzüchtung des Organismus hatte Bujwid 1889. Zwei Jahre später veröffentlichten Wolff und Israel eine genauere Beschreibung des Erregers Wolff und Israel 1891. Durchgängig stockfleckig, insgesamt handelt es sich jedoch um ein noch ordentliches Exemplar dieses frühen Versuchs, sich der biblischen Realien mittels Landkarten zu versichern.
