James Israel 1848-1926 in Berlin geboren studierte und promovierte daselbst 1870. Er trat in Wien weiter ausgebildet 1872 als Assistenzarzt in das Krankenhaus der Berliner jüdischen Gemeinde ein wo er nach seinem Studienaufenthalt in England und Schottland 1875 stellvertretender 1880 definitiver Leiter der chirurgischen Abteilung wurde. Seine unter TRAUBEs Einfluß entstandene Inauguraldissertation hatte sich mit der BRIGHTschen Nierenkrankheit beschäftigt seine weiteren Publikationen waren dann vorwiegend chirurgischen Inhalts. Von ihnen wurden die Untersuchungen über Aktinomykose besonders bekannt ISRAELs Streptothrix. Immer intensiveres Interesse wandte Israel aber dann den chirurgischen Nierenkrankheiten zu - seine erste Mitteilung über eine Nierenoperation stammt aus dem Jahre 1882 wobei er der Physiologie und Pathologie der Nieren der Diagnostik ihrer Erkrankungen und besonders der operativen Technik gründliches Studium angedeihen ließ. Bald wurde er als der Führer in der urologischen Chirurgie allgemein anerkannt. -cf. Fischer p.687f. unknown

Nachdem er bereits im Dezember 1882 einen Fall von Nierenbeckenbauchfistel mitgeteilt hatte referiert er "heute über eine Nierenexstirpation welche ich gerade vor einem Monat also am 6. Mai 1883 ausgeführt habe". Die Patientin überlebte diese Operation 34 Tage. "Die Lehre die wir aus dem ungünstigen Ausgange ziehen müssen ist die dass man bei denjenigen Pyonephrosen welche eine Operation indiciren operieren soll ehe der Pyonephroseninhalt die Nierenkapsel durchbrochen hat. Vor dem Durchbruch sind wir sicher alles Kranke und Krankmachende entfernen zu können nach derselben kann man nur mit dem alten französischen Chirurgen sagen: 'l'opération est faite; dieu le guérira'." Light fraying and stains in a few places. Previous owner's bookplate. 109 pp. Israel Hwasser 1790-1860 was a Swedish medical doctor and professor who became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1854. He can also be considered a developer of Finnish political science. At the turn of the 1830s and 40s Hwasser wrote about Finland's position in his pamphlets. Hwasser's view was that Finland had seceded from Sweden during the Porvoo parliament and made a separate peace with Russia. Hwasser's doctrine of the Finnish state spread to the public consciousness from the beginning of the 1860s. Hörberg hardcover
