Uncommon work by this Jewish author who would go on to become a Confederate Officer during the Civil War. Levy (1827 - 1888) . Was also editor in chief of the Savannah Daily Advertiser, and in April 1868 Levy criticized in print the political views of a certain Dr. James Waring. Waring, apparently thin-skinned, demanded a duel. Levy obliged, but luckily friends were able to defuse the situation (Encyclopedia of Southern Jewish Communities, 2013) . Logan was a popular actress of the mid-19th Century, daughter to Cornelius Logan, a comic actor & playwriter who served as her manager until his death in 1853. While Logan was born in Philadelphia, she made her name in the antebellum South, with many lucrative engagements in cities such as Savannah, where she, no doubt, inspired Mr. Levy to write this work in her honor. First freegraft of the nose! "There is little doubt that the first free bone grafts to the nose were the ones described herewith by James Israel 1848-1926. They were rarities in any location at that time which reveals the termerity of this surgeon." F. McDowell Source books of plastic surgery p.96f. "James Israel was a German surgeon during the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. As was true of most other surgeons during this period Israel was a military surgeon. Although a pioneer in urologic surgery he did make significant advances in plastic surgery. In this work Israel discusses the first free bone graft to the nose where bone was harvested at a site away from the nose and replanted to the nose to give support for a nasal reconstruction. Without this support a nasal reconstruction would fail because of collapse. He was also known in the field of microbiology when in 1878 he was the first to describe the disease known as actinomycosis in humans caused by a pathogen later named Actinomyces israelii." 1995BN21825Bauer 1995. 1995. Softcover. 224 x 146 x 38 cm.
