1907183446London: National Women's Social and Political Union 1907/1908. First edition of this eye-catching pamphlet printing a speech delivered in the aftermath of the "Mud March" organized by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies NUWSS. Afterwards the attendees gathered in Exeter Hall to hear addresses. Zangwill argued that proving the case for women's suffrage was "so simple" that it was "like having to prove one and one are two" p. 3. The "Mud March" held on 9 February 1907 was intended to demonstrate public support for a new women's suffrage bill before the House of Commons. Its nickname derives from the torrential rain endured by more than 3000 marchers representing over 40 suffrage groups. Israel Zangwill 1864-1926 was an author and prominent activist for the women's suffrage movement and for Jewish causes. He was a founding member and later vice-president of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. Provenance: from the collection of the suffrage historian Elizabeth Crawford. Octavo pp. 8. Original wrappers printed in black wire-stitched. Foxed spine split at ends but holding: a very good copy. unknown
