xiv, 94 pages. Generously illustrated with reproductions of black and white photos. "In 1988 the Russian Orthodox Church is celebrating 1,000 years of uninterrupted witness to Jesus Christ and His Holy Church in the Lands of Rus and throughout the whole world. Our forefathers, the pioneers who came to Canada in the late 1890s and early 1900s, were free to follow the Faith of their Forefathers - the Russian Greek Orthodox Faith. In this book, through the efforts of many, we are presenting the histories of twenty-five Patriarchal Parishes in Canada, that continue to live in the faith of their forefathers." - Introduction. "The present book is comprised of two different texts, 'The Lament of Old Serbia' by Abbot Seraphim Ristic? of Dec?ani from 1864, and 'The Current unfortunate state of Old Serbia and Macedonia' by Bishop Sava Barac? of Dec?ani from 1882. Along with these two texts is a short letter by Bishop Sava to the 1878 Berlin Congress."These two narratives are "profoundly valuable testimonies of the oppression under which the Serbs of Kososvo, Metohija and Macedonia lived in the last decades of Ottoman rule. The authors make use of concrete anecdotal examples of the almost daily atrocities , robberies and other acts of violence against the Orthodox Christian population" 118p.[2 copies found in WorldCat] Book

A rare surviving copy of this important reference, made all the more engaging by today's environment of competing fiat currency devaluations. "Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Attractive gilt decoration upon green front board. Legible gilt lettering upon backstrip. Average external soiling and wear. Several chips from and lengthy openings along backstrip which has become brittle with age. Narrow opening along most of front hinge. Back hinge open. Bookplate discretely removed inside front board. Very Good Bulgarian Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In Bulgarian. 56 p., ills. Uncut and untrimmed pages. Ilarion Makariopolski: Metropolitan of Turnovo on the occasion of 50 years since his death. Six copies in WorldCat; OCLC: 222059532 / 34375853. Hilarion of Makariopolis (born Stoyan Stoyanov Mihaylovski), (1812-1875) was a 19th-century Bulgarian cleric and one of the leaders of the struggle for an autonomous Bulgarian church. Born in Elena in 1812 in a prominent Bulgarian family, Mihaylovski received substantial schooling for the period, initially in his native town and later at the Greek school in Arbanasi. He became a monk in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos in 1832 and continued his education at the school of noted Greek enlightener Theophilos Kairis on the island of Andros, later studying for two years at a famous high school in Athens. A close friend of Georgi Rakovski, Ilarion Makariopolski took an active part in the Macedonian revolutionary society. Since 1844 he guided the Bulgarian church struggle from Constantinople together with Neofit Bozveli, and was exiled to Mount Athos between 1845 and 1850. On 3 April 1860, during Easter service in Constantinople, Ilarion intentionally did not mention the name of the Patriarch of Constantinople, which, according to the canon law, is an act of throwing off his authority. A decision of the Patriarchate sent Makariopolski back to Mount Athos into exile in 1861-1864 together with the bishops that supported him, Auxentius of Veles and Paisius of Plovdiv. After the Ottoman government of Abdülaziz granted the right to establish an autonomous Bulgarian Exarchate for the Bulgarian dioceses under the Sultan's firman promulgated on February 28 (the Julian calendar), 1870, Ilarion was a member of the Provisional Mixed Exarchic Council and of the first Synod. Upon the unilateral declaration by Antim I of an independent national church of the Bulgarians in May 1872, Ilarion was anathematized by the Patriarchal Synod. The condemnation was later affirmed at the Council in Constantinople in September the same year. Since 1872 he was Metropolitan of Tarnovo and died in Constantinople on 4 June 1875. He was buried in the yard of the Bulgarian St Stephen Church in the city. Ilarion Ridge in Breznik Heights on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named for Ilarion Makariopolski. (Source: Wikipedia).
