2006BEN487An album with pictures by Costas Balafas from his trips to Mount Athos from 1969 to 2001. The artist's purpose was to put together his own photographic testimony about the place and the people that inhabit it. Under his gaze the imposing monastery buildings bring to life the glory of the Byzantine Empire while the life of the monks with its own particular organisation unchanged over the passing years brings to his mind what they have sacrificed in the struggles of the Greek Nation. It also includes excerpts from interviews by Kostas Balafas which were filmed by Angelos Papastefanou. Both the shooting of the photographs by Kostas Balafas and the implementation of the book were made possible by the valuable contribution and assistance of Brother Ioustinos Simonopetritis a monk of the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra.

// Hard cover 28x24 cm 276 pp. 180 B/W pictures; net weight 1640 gr.

IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. 'This book explores anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine an area that has so far been relatively neglected in academic studies. Anti-Chalcedonian asceticism in Palestine is significant because it was in Jerusalem in the middle of the 5th century that monks who opposed the Council of Chalcedon first attempted to establish a dissenting anti-Chalcedonian ecclesiastical hierarchy. The monk Peter the Iberian in particular was a key force in this project because of his high-level political connections to the members of the imperial court in Constantinople. The beginnings of anti-Chalcedonian history in Palestine constitute the fist tangible manifestation of the schism between the adherents and opponents of the Council of Chalcedon a schism which endures until today. This study also offers a further contribution in the field work carried out on site in the Middle East which traced the footsteps of Peter the Iberian and his followers into the regions of modern Israel Palestine Jordan Lebanon Turkey and Sinai/Egypt.' Summarizing comparatively the previous theories he quotes a rather extensive bibliography and analyzes the problems seeking for a documented solution. So he proposes the 'Nymphaeus' i.e. the underground crypt the so-called Catacomb to the South of the Hagia Sophia Church. The book is also an important contribution to the objective approach of the Byzantine topography of Thessalonica.

==================================================================

IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order.
