Young lawyer is assigned to administer the family fortune of a difficult young woman. Inscribed by Baldwin on front endpaper to crime novelist Mignon Eberhart and her husband: "Minnie & Allen with much love - Me." The friendship between Baldwin and Eberhart is well documented with Eberhart considered the founder of the modern romance suspense or mystery novel. Lithograph illustrations 322 two per plate except for frontis & last illustration which are single plates. Octavo Victorian blind stamped ribbed cloth rebacked/ tips worn Frontis TP xvi 788pp 162 plates with 322 illustrations. Some foxing though mainly marginal and 2 plates with some staining while towards the end there is a marginal brown stain not touching the plate area but for the last few text pages just touching the letters. The yellow glazed endpapers are brown mottled. Illustrations 1-80 show nature mostly as groups of animals and plants. Illustrations 81-241 depict trades incl. several cooking scenes miners textile weaving wig-makers etc. 243-256 cosmography & geography showing different religions virtues. 269-282 show children playing men playing billiards wrestling circus & theatres lessons in fencing dancing balloon rides fireworks bullfights horse racing a marvellous train with a postillion blowing a horn & open coaches and a chimney like a barber's pole later we see deep sea diving bells being used to salvage cannons. There is an example of slave traders a summer fair and Christmas celebrations finally a few more trades eg. forging steel the file maker carpets being made nightwatchman messenger and post with finally a grave-side scene. Each illustration is accompanied by a 5 language text - English German French & Latin and newly added for the first time in this edition Italian. These describe the animals and the trades etc. This Gailer reworking of the Orbis Pictus is nearly a new book and makes one of the most complete book of trades cf. Seebass 398 Wegehaupt I 697. A beautifully preserved set. A rare survival from the golden age of Australian aviation being a complete run of twelve issues of the monthly journal of the New South Wales Aero Club. The attractive colour covers are all well preserved capturing some of the excitement and romance of flying in the early thirties.</p> <p>The journal features numerous fascinating articles many of which detail aviation in remote and rural areas of Australia. Of special interest are entries on Tasmanian civil aviation the Narromine and Mount Gambier Air Pageants and the rise of Hargrave Air Park. Flying Boats feature prominently as do other technical articles on radio communication systems glider pilot training trials of new models including the Lascondor Saloon Monoplane and the novel Harkness-Hornet and the like.</p> <p>Each issue of the journal includes a scale model plane plan with measurements. Loosely inserted is a price sheet for modelling materials including balsa dopes propeller blanks and sundries printed for Herbert Small Pty. Ltd. This company sold model aeroplane construction parts and sets and lists three separate retail premises in Sydney Melbourne and Adelaide.</p> <p>Complete runs of the Aero Club Journal are noteworthy with only two substantial holdings in Australian instutional collections at the National Library and State Library of New South Wales respectively. This bibliography is not listed in Ian McLaren's comprehensive bibliography Australian Civil Aviation 1994 or his earlier Bibliographical Survey 1958. Likewise it is not noted in the respective bibliographies on Australian aviation by Graeme Potter and Ian Wilson.
