He and his sons Charles and Samuel Jr. were referred to by historians as the Queene's Binder.

Mearne was born in Reading England and lived all of his professional life in Little Britain in Aldersgate. He passed his apprenticeship in 1646 and set up as a bookseller and publisher. In 1655 he and two others went to the Netherlands where he probably performed a service to Charles II in exile because he was named bookbinder to the king on 20 June 1660. He was also a part owner of the king's printing house with John Bill and Christopher Barker. In 1668 Charles petitioned to have Mearne and others admitted to the Stationers' Company. In the Stationers' Company Mearne would serve as warden and later master. In 1674 he became the stationer in ordinary to Charles and the next year he and his son were made grants for life to their position.

The earliest surviving books bound by Mearne come from 1655 while many survive from his time as bookbinder to the king. His workshop produced beautiful gold tooled and onlay bindings for Charles and the royal libraries. For the chapels gifts and presentations of the installation of the Knight of the Garter ceremonies Mearne's shop produced even more lavishly bound books.

Professionally Mearne was popular with other publishers for his work at hunting down illegal presses. While he did not perform the binding himself personally after his appointment he oversaw the production and designs of his books.

Samuel Mearne Sr. died in 1683 with his son Charles dying in 1686 and Samuel Mearne Jr. taking over the shop and appointments until the Glorious Revolution in 1689.

THIS VOLUME IS VERY HEAVY AND WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL POSTAGE. 1690178341Lisbon: Officina de Miguel Deslandes 1690. Holier than thou: Franciscan-Jesuit rivalries in East Asia First edition rare institutionally and in commerce of one of the few sources on Franciscan missionary efforts in China India and South East Asia during the 16th and 17th centuries. The politically motivated chronicle stresses the leading role of the order rather than the Jesuits in spearheading the expansion of Portuguese religious and political influence in the region. WorldCat records copies in seven locations only none of which are in Asia. "Jacinto de Deus is an important author given the limited number of works printed by the Franciscans in the East" "Brachilogia". Born in Macao in 1612 to a Portuguese father and Chinese mother Cecília da Cunha he was ordained as a Franciscan in 1630 and served for the next five decades in Madre de Deus province Goa. Vergel de plantas was completed in 1679 but only published after his death at Goa in 1681. It narrates the history of the order after its first representatives arrived in Goa in 1540 and describes the controversies surrounding the creation of Madre de Deus in particular the absorption of Franciscan custodies in Macao and Malacca into the new province's administrative and governing purview. A lengthy section representing pages 115 to 271 addresses interactions in China beginning with the abortive mission of Pedro de Alfaro to Canton in 1579 which unsuccessfully tried to challenge the Jesuit monopoly over dealings with China and exploit the governor of Guangdong's perceived openness to dealings with foreigners. The China section also draws on material from the writings of the Jesuit Gabriel de Magalhães 1610-1677 providing a description of the Chinese empire. Two copies with varying title pages are held at the Portuguese National Library and copies can also be found at the British Library Yale Harvard Indiana Minnesota and Leiden. Quarto 275 x 195 mm in sixes pp. xii 479. Ornamental woodcut initials headpieces and chalice motif on title page. Nineteenth-century calf raised bands rolled in gilt label lettered in gilt compartments double-ruled in gilt with gilt central lozenges gilt date at foot boards with scrolling panel in blind marbled endpapers edges sprinkled red. Contemporary inscription on title page "Pertence a Fr. Antonio de Nossa Senora dos septe dores" - "Belongs to Friar Antonio of our Lady of the Seven Sorrows"; bookplate and shelf ticket of António Pereira da Nóbrega de Souza da Camara 1840-1918 whose 3200-work library was auctioned in 1966. A little worming and marking to boards tidemarks and worm trails at gutter of first leaves couple of marginal losses and closed tears text unaffected: a very good copy presenting handsomely on the shelf. Small 8vo 15 x 9.5 cm. With 2 woodcut decorated initials 2 series. Rare first and until 1946 only edition of a concise account of the qualities needed to be a good ruler and the best Christian manner of educating people to be rulers by Jacinto de Deos or Deus Macau 1612-Goa 1681 a Capuchin Franciscan missionary in Goa under Portuguese rule dedicated to the Prince Regent and future King Dom Pedro II 1648-1706 of Portugal. Dom Pedro was 22 when De Deos published it though he had already been de facto head of state for three years. It was no doubt intended both for him and for the future education of his daughter and heir then two years old but in the event she died before him. The fact that De Deos was a Franciscan in Asia gives the book special significance for its insights into his attitudes for the Jesuits largely dominated the literature on missionary work in Asia. We know less about the Franciscans though they claimed priority over the Jesuits in most regions.Pedro Craesbeeck of Antwerp who had worked in Christoffel Plantins printing office there in the 1580s set up his own printing office in Lisbon by 1597 founding a prominent and highly respected printing dynasty that continued there to 1690. With manuscript annotations on the title-page and first free end-leaf including 17th- and early 18th-century owners inscriptions: Araujo 200 N. Lucas de Slenezes and He. do .ed des Manoel Dias . 1712. With a small wormhole in the lower fore-edge margin occasionally slightly affecting a letter of the text in the first third a thinner worm trail in the upper outside corner rarely touches the text a minor water stain at the head of quire P and a small yellow stain on S8v but still in very good condition. The binding also shows a few small worm holes and half of the upper headband is lost but it remains in good condition.l Innocencio III 238; Porbase 2 copies; WorldCat 11529534 433447739 7 copies. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page le Solitaire 3 woodcut decorated initials 2 woodcut headpieces and a woodcut tailpiece. Ad 2 with a frame built up from typographical ornaments on the title page 3 woodcut decorated initials a woodcut headpiece plus 8 headpieces and 2 tailpieces built up from typographical ornaments. 2 works in 1 volume. 16 87 1 blank; 16 548 19 1 blank pp. Ad 1: First edition of a rare work with commentary on the four Gospels by an important Orientalist. The work is partly printed in Syriac Arabic Hebrew and Greek. Louis de Dieu 1590-1642 who was well-versed in all these languages was renowned for his interpretations of biblical texts which were based on a wide and profound linguistic learning. His studies were mainly concerned with the early and more recent translations of the Bible. In the present work he compares the Gospel texts in the Oriental languages with that of the Latin translations by humanist Desiderius Erasmus 1466-1536 and Calvinist Theodore Beza 1519-1605.De Dieu was a Dutch Protestant minister and a leading orientalist. He studied theology and Oriental languages at the University of Leiden under Thomas Erpenius and Jacob Golius. The present work is the first part of a series of four separately published works with commentaries on the New Testament. They were reprinted as a single body of work in 1693 under the title Critica sacra sive animadversiones in loca quaedam difficiliora. De Dieu also wrote the first Persian grammar published in Europe. Ad 2: The second work in this volume is a scarce treatise on the genealogy of Christ and the chronology of the "Passio Christi" based on evangelist sources. It has only been recorded in four libraries and we have not been able to find any other copies in sales records of the past century. It is apparently so scarce that the USTC has marked it as a "lost book".With a later annotation on the front pastedown about the contents of the work and an ownership annotation by Swiss theologian Johann Kaspar Hagenbuch 1700-1763 at the head of the title page. The vellum is slightly scratched and stained on the boards the work has been professionally rebacked with the original spine laid down. 16332057Mexico City: Por Francisco Salbago 1633. Good. 15189 of 192 leaves; lacking leaves ¶1 blank Y4-5 Zz3 Zz6-8. R1-2 cancels. Contemporary vellum manuscript spine label. Vellum worn front hinge separating. Deep marca de fuego along top edge with resultant loss occasionally touching headlines. Scattered contemporary manuscript annotations. Some foxing and soiling internally. The unrecorded first Mexican edition of this religious manual on "dying well" by Martin de la Madre Dios a Spanish Carmelite monk. The work was first published in Zaragoza where the author was ensconced in 1628 was translated into Latin 1640 & 1641 and French 1646 and was re-published twice in Spain 1643 & 1650 thus making the present edition the second overall. Although it was clearly a popular text the only edition surviving in more than one recorded copy is the 1641 Latin translation printed in Cologne and is clearly the type of book that received heavy use.

This genre of work attempted to provide a guide to Catholics on the significance of death and the steps to take in order to have a "good" death that would ease the way to heaven and treats death as the final most important religious ritual in the life of a Christian. The present work has a lengthy initial section explaining these views to its reader and providing examples of good deaths from the Bible lives of saints and even Greek philosophers. The second part covers the major acts necessary such as confession to enact a good death and the third most brief section contains instructions for the numerous smaller duties.

Francisco Salbago the publisher was the official printer of the Holy Office and the Inquisition in Mexico during the 1630s. This copy bears the marca de fuego of the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri in San Miguel de Allende. Slightly defective lacking three internal and three final leaves but nevertheless a good example of an otherwise unrecorded early 17th century religious manual and Mexican imprint. Ussher dated the creation as year 1 counting time forward systematically using Biblical chronology and genealogy. 65611Lugduni Batavorum Leiden: Ex Typographia Elzeviriana 1627. FIRST EDITION OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION AND THE "CATHOLIC EPISTLES" IN SYRIAC. 4to. 20.5 x 15.5 cm. pp.xviii2111 colophon. Contemporary vellum manuscript title to spine edges dyed blue. With the title in red and black in an ornamental architectural woodcut frame with a palm tree at the head and woodcut palm tree device above the colophon both acquired from Erpenius. Text in Syriac Hebrew Greek and roman types. Ex libris Jacobi Cavalli with his ownership inscription appearing three times on the endpapers almost certainly Giacamo Cavalli 1678-1758 a Catholic convert of Jewish descent from Verona later a Professor of Hebrew at Rome. Some light soiling to vellum contents with some occasional light toning and spotting overall a very good genuine example. The first edition of any early text of the Book of Revelations in the ancient Syriac language a book that had been lacking in the manuscripts followed by the earlier Syriac New Testaments. It is also the first book the Elzeviers printed with Syriac or any other "oriental" type their earlier forays into printing with non-Latin types having been limited to Greek and Hebrew. Syria is the liturgical language of the Maronites and other eastern Christian communities. It is also a close relation to the Aramaic spoken by Christ. This was the language of the first Jewish Christians and that in which some portions of the Old Testament and some have argued for parts of the New was written. The main text is set in two columns with the Syriac text set in Syriac type on the outside and the Syriac text set in Hebrew type on the inside an aid to scholars less familiar with the Syriac script. Two columns in smaller type at the foot provide the original Greek text and a literal Latin translation of the Syriac. The whole is well printed and laid out showing why the Elzeviers were quickly gaining a reputation as the leading scholarly printers and publishers. Thomas Erpenius made Leiden University the leading centre for the study of oriental languages when appointed professor of oriental languages in 1613. He set up his own printing office acquiring or commissioning types for Arabic Syriac Samaritan and Ethiopic and inaugurating it with his edition of Lockman's fables in Arabic 1615. His death from the plague at age forty cut his work short in 1624. Ludovicus de Dieu 1590-1642 Regent of the Walloon College associated with the University had studied under Erpenius and his successor in Arabic studies Jacob Golius but for Syriac he became Erpenius's spiritual successor. The present book was among his earliest publications. Although Syriac New Testaments had been published earlier no source had been found for the Syriac text of the Book of Revelation which was lacking in the standard "Peshitta" Bible a Syriac Old and New Testament whose text was probably established in the 4th century. In his 1599 Polyglot Elias Hutter therefore filled the gap with his own new translation but De Dieu published the present text based on a manuscript from the library of the great orientalist Joseph Scaliger apparently a copy made in Rome c.1580 of an ancient manuscript of the Syriac text established by the Persian Philoxenus Bishop of Mabbug in Mesopotamia in 508 and corrected by the Palestinian monk Thomas of Harkel near Alexandria in 616. For that reason Darlow & Moule Smitskamp and others call the present book the "editio princeps". 19490011871949. Original Art . Soft cover. Very Good. 7 3/4" x 10 1/2. Original illustration 7 3/4" x 10 1/2" ink on stiff art board. Age toned four tack holed early sticker on back of dealer "Fantasy Focus Return Post Guaranteed Bx 6151 Met Stn Los Angeles Cal 55". Penciled words "Microcosmic God" in script also on back. In his early years John Grossman - later the noted mainstream artist and graphic designer - did a number of pulp illustrations. This one signed and dated in 1949 was done in the richly textured Golden Age style of Virgil Finlay with a variety of detailed stipplings and crosshatchings see scans. Apparently an homage to Theodore Sturgeon's timeless novelette Microcosmic God that story was written in 1941 8 years prior to this illustration or possible an illustration for a later reprint of it - assuming the penciled title on the back is correct and it certainly seems that if you've read the story. Scarce vintage golden age illustration by an artist who did not continue in that genre. L- 100

paperback

1756WRCAM37480Madrid 1756. 2pp. plus integral blank leaf. Maltese cross printed above title. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotation in ink and later pencil annotation on first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Buen Retiro Spain on February 13 1756 signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales with additional manuscript annotations. Inscriptions in ink on recto and verso of integral blank leaf. Extremely light dampstaining in margins occasional minor soiling. A very good copy. A rare broadsheet proclamation by Ferdinand VI King of Spain confirming that the law is to be observed in a precise and punctual manner. The pertinent law recorded earlier in the RECOPILACION DE LAS INDIAS outlines the method of reviewing the administration and recording the accounts of the hospitals in the New World maintained by the religious order of St. John of God. The Hospital Brothers of St. John of God were present in America most notably New Spain and Peru beginning in the early 17th century. Following the initial 16th-century wave of evangelization represented by the Franciscans Dominicans Augustinians Mercedarians and Jesuits the Hospital Brothers was one "of another group of orders of varying characteristics but largely devoted to caring for the sick and the destitute in the cities. Their very existence attested the new needs of an increasingly complex colonial society" CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF LATIN AMERICA. This copy accomplished in manuscript in Buen Retiro on February 13 1756 is signed by Joachim Joseph Vazquez y Morales as representative of the King of Spain with the inscription "Yo El Rey" and the annotation "Por mandado del Rey." Manuscript inscriptions on the recto and verso of the integral blank leaf attest to the document being reviewed by the Spanish colonial government in Santiago de Chile in 1757.

A rare proclamation concerning the work of the Hospital Brothers of St. John of God in the New World.
