All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers in dark blue green and yellow color tones. Illustrated with full paged engraved plates eleven in Volume I including frontispiece; ten plates in Volume II. Text is dual columned. Volume I is Genesis through Solomon's Song. Volume II is Isaiah through Revelation and includes Notes to the first volume and new testament in three columns at the back. Both volumes unpaginated. Each measures 15" tall x 11.75" wide. On a shelf this set spans 5 inches. ESTC: T95048. Herbert 1399. <br><br>CONDITION: Cover shows overall wear and discoloration. Inner hinges have cracked yet boards are firmly attached and the binding is solid. Occasional dampstain yet text and illustrations are largely unaffected. Volume I contains a full page of handwritten family records on the front flyleaf of the family of William Marriott not ancestors of the hotel family in dipped ink the earliest date being 1807. Leaves have lightly toned with only occasional discoloration or marking. Engravings are magnificent. A lovely heirloom-quality set. Domenech was a missionary in Texas and Mexico and chaplain and almoner in the service of Maximilien Emperor of Mexico. He wrote a number of works on the American southwest and the American Indian including a rather unfortunate treatise which seriously discredited his scholarly abilities. This particular work is based on a number of sources including an earlier book Missionary Adventures in Texas and Mexico but it is chiefly a compilation from Pacific Railroad reports from which some of the plates were also taken. Other plates are lifted from the work of George Catlin. Parts of the text relate to Texas New Mexico California Utah Oregon Louisiana Minnesota &c. with some mention of Canada. There are sections on Indian antiquities; and descriptions of the various tribes customs languages religions &c. Sabin 20555. A fascinating copy. <br><br>ABOUT ENGRAVER JAMES FITTLER: James Fittler 1758 to 1835 was a British engraver of portraits and landscapes and an illustrator of books. He was appointed by King George III to be his marine engraver. Fittler was born in London in October 1758. In April 1778 he enrolled as student at the Royal Academy Schools and studied engraving. Besides book illustrations he distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign artists chiefly portraits. He also engraved landscapes marine subjects and topographical views and was appointed marine engraver to George III. In 1788 he resided at 62 Upper Charlotte Street Rathbone Place in London. Fittler was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1800. He died at Turnham Green and was buried in Chiswick churchyard. Il est aussi le fils de Jean-Pierre de Varade, libraire dont le successeur est Michel de Vascosan, élevé par Jacques de Varade (frère de Jérôme) qui sera aussi libraire juré en 1528. A brilliant linguist he was also a leading orientalist of his time. He was educated at Leiden where he was regent of the Walloon College during his later years. His Animadversiones in Veteris Testamenti is a critical and exegetical commentary on the books of the Old Testament. It was printed in Leiden by Bonaventure and Abraham Elzevir.
