A pair of color woodcut prints 19 x 24.7 cm. very clean excellent copy with rare silver over-print of tiger whiskers multi-color print superb and lovely example most lost to attrition. UNIQUE IMAGE . . . SUPERB & STUNNING MULTI-COLOR TIGER DOOR GOD IMAGE . . . A MATCHING PAIR . . .MOST WERE LOST BURNED AFTER THE CHINESE NEW YEAR & REPLACED . . . A BRILLIANTLY CLEAN BRIGHT & VIVID PAIR . This is an excellent item. Beautifully executed in multi- color woodblocks. The final touch was the over-printing of silver tiger whiskers an innovation and technique hitherto never found. . The print shows a central dominant tiger upon his throne. There are four younger tigers surrounding him. Each looks at the dominant tiger each is a different color. . The print is gently matted using white paper with a larger border covered by the mat. The work is ready for framing and display. . This kind of print is often referred to as a "Door God" type work which is pasted in pairs to the front door of a Chinese house at New Years. The old ones are pulled down and burned as an offering to the Gods. The new ones are also an offering for good luck to the Gods. These ephemeral color prints almost never survived after a year's display. They were lost to posterity for the most part. . RARE EXAMPLES: This item is sold in matching pairs. They are RARE and unique in the use of 10 different colors plus the silver color whisker overlay which is almost never found. . REFERENCE: .
