This Holman's Edition of the Bible contains both the Old and New Testaments with The Apocrypha and Concordance. This is a very large very heavy family heirloom Bible measuring 13.25" tall x 10" wide x 3.75" thick weighing 15 lbs. 8 oz. Bound in full leather with an ornate sculpted cover. Hubbed spine bears five raised bands ornamented and lettered in gilt. Ornamented in gilt along inside board edges. All edges gilt. Off white moire endpapers. Illustrated with twelve plate engravings each with a protective leaf. Dark brown silk bookmark. Text is dual columened boxed in by a border. Scripture annotation is printed within the right and left margins. Family pages to record marriages births deaths and memoranda are included between The Apocrypha and the New Testament and are unmarked/unfilled. Also included at the back is A Chronological Index to the Holy Bible; An Alphabetical Table of the Proper Names in the Old and New Testaments; Tables of Scripture Measures Weights and Coins with Appendix; A Concordance to the Old and New Testaments; The Psalms of David in Metre; and an Index of Meters. Leaves have gently toned with very little an only occasional foxing. Engravings are magnificent. Unmarked. A very lovely very heavy Bible which could be passed down through generations. This is The "Killer" Bible famously known for it's misprint of the verse in Mark 7:27 which says "But Jesus said unto her Let the children first be killed: for it is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it unto the dogs." Herbert 1394.This volume 2 contains Proverbs through Revelation. Hardcover. Bound in navy blue textured leather. Covers are plain with the exception of a gilt tooled decorative lining bordering the edges. Hubbed spine with five raised bands gilt lettering and decorative gilt lining. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers in dark blue gold magenta and white color themes. A decorative gilt tooling boarders the inner board edges. Title page is ornamented. Dual columned. Illustrated with lovely copper engraved plates in black and white throughout. Chapters are listed in Roman Numerals. Unpaginated. CONDITION: Shows overall shelf wear with some foxing and occasional discoloration and offsetting in spots within the textblock yet copy is fully legible. Some cracking at the center where The New Testament begins yet binding is sound and boards are firmly affixed. Ex libre bookplate affixed to the front pastedown from a previous owner. Free from marginalia or annotation. A fascinating copy. ABOUT ENGRAVER JAMES FITTLER: James Fittler 1758 to 1835 was a British engraver of portraits and landscapes and an illustrator of books. He was appointed by King George III to be his marine engraver. Fittler was born in London in October 1758. In April 1778 he enrolled as student at the Royal Academy Schools and studied engraving. Besides book illustrations he distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign artists chiefly portraits. He also engraved landscapes marine subjects and topographical views and was appointed marine engraver to George III. In 1788 he resided at 62 Upper Charlotte Street Rathbone Place in London. Fittler was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1800. He died at Turnham Green and was buried in Chiswick churchyard. His prints books and copper-plates were sold at Sotheby's on 14–16 July 1825. Wikipedia Additional photographs available upon request.
