1880055960Cairo: Jurnal Kevakib al-Misrî / Matbaat al-Kastiliyah. AH 1297 Jumada I = 30 April 1880 CE. 1880. 3rd Edition . Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Contemporary burgundy quarter calf. Roy. 8vo. 24 x 16 cm. In Arabic. 144 p. Occasionally browned and foxed on pages and edges fading on the boards. Marginal manuscript notes in Arabic on the first four pages. On the colophon page the phrase "Yâ Kabîkaj" is handwritten. In Islamic culture this name refers both to a jinn believed to be the protector of books and paper and to the bookworm itself. Traditionally writing this invocation inside a book was believed to protect it from worms and other pests. Overall a very good copy. Scarce second Castel edition third in the literature of this book attributed to Hasan al-Bakrî featuring popular historical and legendary tales of a highly romanticized and mythologized account of the Islamic expansion into Yemen. The work recounts early Muslim warriors' Islamic conquests and heroic exploits often blending historical events with folklore and imaginative embellishments. This edition is also known for referencing Ra's al-Ghul the Head of the Ghoul possibly including encounters with fantastical creatures such as this Ghoul in Arabic folklore and mythology. The first edition was published in 1865 by Castel Printing House and the second edition was published in al-Mabna Yemen in AH 1295 = 1877 CE. Al-Bakrî is the purported author of several Islamic works in Arabic most notably a biography of Muhammad entitled Kitâb al-anwâr 'Book of Lights'. There is no consensus regarding his historicity whether he lived or his floruit when he lived. Little is known of Hasan al-Bakrî which may explain his absence from early dictionaries. He may have been from or active in Bara since he is sometimes called the "Baran preacher". Ibn Taymiyya calls him an Ash'arî. Wikipedia. As of May 2025 OCLC does not list this edition. Slight wear to the spine light water stains on the lower corners of the pages and edges of the first volume bumped corners occasional fading and browning on pages and edges. Overall a good set in one volume. The rare second Cairo edition both the first and second editions published in the Arab world are rare. The work recounts the travels of the medieval Arab explorer undertaken in two separate journeys spaced closely together during a time marked by Mongol and Turkish dominance across Asia and the Middle East. Spanning more than twenty-eight years his journeys took him from Mecca and Medina to Byzantine Constantinople and from India to China. The text was dictated in its original form to the scribe Ibn Juzayy who at times abridged the material and occasionally added minor insertions resulting in the final composition of the work. This is the foremost primary source on the Arabian Peninsula in the medieval period. Early editions of the Rihla in the Arab world have often been criticized due to the delayed appearance of critical comparative editions. Following the Cairo edition in AH 1288 1871 only one other edition appeared in Beirut in 1927 with three more issued in Cairo by 1938. All editions published in the Arab world came significantly later than the first complete and bilingual edition by Defrémery and Sanguinetti published in Paris. The first volume includes Ibn Battuta's first great voyage began in 1325 when he left his hometown of Tangier Morocco intending only to complete the Hajj to Mecca. However the journey sparked a lifelong passion for travel. Moving east along the North African coast through the territories of Abd al-Wadid and Hafsid he reached Egypt and then Alexandria where Sufi mystics foretold a vast journey ahead. He took multiple detours: first through Upper Egypt then back to Cairo and onward to Damascus and across Palestine before finally reaching Medina and Mecca. After completing the Hajj rather than returning home he travelled through Iraq and Persia stopping in Baghdad Tabriz Mosul and Mardin. His second pilgrimage to Mecca followed after which he sailed from Aden to Somalia visiting Zeila and the flourishing port city of Mogadishu ruled by a Somali sultan. Continuing down the Swahili Coast he stopped in Mombasa then returned to Mecca for a third Hajj. In 1330 or 1332 he set off again heading through Anatolia though his route across cities like Milas Konya and Erzurum appears confused. He joined a diplomatic mission from Astrakhan to Constantinople where he met the Byzantine emperor and visited Hagia Sophia. The second volume begins with he journey through Bukhara and Samarkand before crossing the Hindu Kush into the Indian subcontinent Indus River. Reaching Delhi in 1333 he was appointed a qadi by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq. Although he held prestige political instability and suspicion plagued his tenure. Eventually an embassy to China offered him a means of escape. Though attacked by bandits near the coast he continued to Gujarat and then to Calicut. There as storms struck and one of his ships was lost Ibn Battuta's voyage to China nearly ended before it began yet he persisted still far from completing his global odyssey. The second volume contains content pp. 254-260. Bearing the provenance inscription " " i.e. Saleh Kamil at the base of the spine along with two ownership seals of the Turkish medieval historian Faruk Sümer 1924-1995 on the frontispiece of the first volume and the final page of the second volume. NL-07001
Rare map of Yemen compiled by indigenous cartographer.

This striking and historically significant map entitled The Yemen was compiled by the elusive Yemeni cartographer H. Althamary - an anglicisation of Husayn ʿAbd Allah Dhamari - who is one of a handful of non-western indigeous cartographers active during the first decades of Arab independence.

The map is rendered in warm ochres and yellows muted orange and bright blue conveying the country's varied elevation through a colour-coded relief scheme. The Red Sea coast forms the western boundary the Gulf of Aden defines the southern edge and the region of Asir marks the northern limit. The eastern frontier fades into the vastness of the Rubʻ al-Khali deliberately leaving the territory of the then-independent People's Democratic Republic of Yemen undefined. Strategically significant governorates including Taiz al-Baydaʾ and Maʾrib are clearly indicated.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The omission of South Yemen from the map reflects the tense political climate of the period. A brief border conflict erupted between the two Yemeni states in October 1972 resolved by the Cairo Agreement which proposed eventual unification. North Yemen was aligned with Saudi Arabia and the south with the Soviet Union. The two nations ultimately merged in 1990 forming the modern Republic of Yemen.

RARITY

The first edition of this map was published in Egypt in 1972 following the border conflict mentioned above. Both an Arabic edition and another English edition followed in 1976. Ours is a fine example of the second English edition. Althamary is alsoalso recognised for an equally rare companion map of Sanʿaʾ.

Institutional examples are recorded at only seven libraries worldwide OCLC no. 5485806 making this an exceptional rarity on the open market. Institutional holdings include the Library of Congress Cornell University the University of Exeter Leiden University and the National Library of Scotland.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Colour lithograph printed on thin paper. Some natural cockling but otherwise in excellent condition.

Stesso editore e anno di pubblicazione per tutte e tre le parti.
Prima edizione, molto rara.

62377Cairo: al-Maktab al-misri al-hadith 1978. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. 24.5 x 16.5 cm. pp.334. Text mostly in Arabic with some English. Publisher's original lemon cloth upper cover gilt-lettered in Arabic. With the unclipped dust-jacket showing a map showing the Gulf States. Book with 25 plates and 2 folding maps. Accompanied by 7 loose folding maps and genealogical tables ranging from 70 x 54 cm to 36 x 49 cm. Some light wear to maps and charts the book itself with just some trivial light spotting to edges generally an excellent copy in a well preserved jacket. First edition first printing of this study of the Arabian Peninsula in the late 18th and early 19th centuries examining the early history of the United Arab Emirates and Oman much enhanced by photographs of the forts of the Gulf and reproductions of paintings depicting battles and complete with large loose genealogical charts showing the descent of ruling families of the United Arab Emirates and Oman including the Nahyan Qasimi and Busa'id families. The period between 1793 and 1818 marks a turning point in the history of the Gulf as the First Saudi State expanded and came into conflict with Oman and the British signed treatises with the leaders of the region. The author begins by surveying the history of the Busa'id family in Oman the confederation of Bani Yas and the Qawasim. Next he examines the eastwards expansion of the First Saudi State and the spread of its influence including the alliance between it and Ra's al-Khaima. The British decision to become militarily involved in the Gulf is presented here as the result of a desire to limit the influence of the Saudis and Wahhabism. After studying the conflict between the Saudis and the Omanis the author discusses the fall of the First Saudi State at the hands of the Ottomans and the lasting impact that the alliances formed during this period had on the emirates of the UAE. The author's research is augmented with the text of the treatises signed between the East India Company Oman and the Emirates between 1789 and 1820. The author Muhammad Morsi Abdullah was a leading historian of the emergence of the United Arab Emirates; he was awarded his doctorate at Cambridge for a thesis on the modern history of the UAE after which he returned to his work in Abu Dhabi as Director of the Documentation and Studies Center in the Office of the President of the United Arab Emirates. In 1969 Abdullah published the book "Abu Dhabi Between Yesterday and Today" as well as a map of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. In 1972 he participated in the crucial project of making the first map of the United Arab Emirates itself. Fittingly the present work was issued with seven large maps and charts alongside the book which is itself illustrated with two folding maps and numerous photographic plates providing a visual history of the UAE.
