William Henry Hudson 4 August 1841 - 18 August 1922 known in Argentina as Guillermo Enrique Hudson was an Anglo-Argentine author naturalist and ornithologist. Born in the Argentine pampas where he roamed free in his youth he observed bird life and collected specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. The Patagonian birds Knipolegus hudsoni and Asthenes hudsoni are named after him. Hudson travelled in April 1874 when he boarded the steamer Ebro for England. He began to travel in England and wrote Nature in Downland 1900. His books on the English countryside all of them set in Wiltshire including Hampshire Days 1903 Afoot in England 1909 and A Shepherd's Life 1910. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. From the Alpine Guide series this is a new edition of this book reconstructed and revised on behalf of the Alpine Club under the general editorship of A V Valentine Richards.327 pages describing in detail the alpine regions with large pull out map at the front and 5 smaller colour pull out maps in the book. Front map of the central Alps is complete with tiny tear on outer margin and tiny split on the centre fold a little foxed on rear with some browning showing lightly through on map and there is a light brown line along the centre fold. There is a fabric strip on rear of map this I believe is put on at publication it is not hiduing a split. The first and last two pages are browned rest of pages are clean previous owners name on rear of front endpaper.
