Clarke was employed by the Hampden Mining Company sailed from New York in January 1849 and traveled through central Mexico and Arizona before reaching the California gold region in August of that year. His narrative provides the first printed description of the route from Camargo Mexico through Chihuahua and Sonora to the Gila River of Arizona. The book is also said to contain on page 12 the earliest reference in print to petroleum in Los Angeles. This was the final book by geographer and explorer Clements Markham. On 29 January 1916 while reading in bed by candlelight Markham set fire to the bedclothes and was overcome by smoke. He died the following day. Lands Of Silence was unfinished but it was completed by F. H. H. Guillemard and published in 1921 five years after Markham's death. It is a comprehensive account of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions from earliest times to Scott's doomed final journey to the South Pole in 1912. Markham's active involvement in Polar exploration and spanned 60 years ranging from the search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to masterminding Captain Scott's first expedition. Highly acclaimed upon publication it is still regarded as one of the most important contributions on the subject. Markham himself was actively involved in polar exploration for over 50 years.
