small folio [34 x 27 cm]; x, 84, [iv, ads] pp, 30 fine engraved plates including frontis and extra engraved title page (complete as listed), with tissue guards. contemporary full morocco with round gilt picture of dance scene & musicians on front cover, rebacked preserving original spine and gilt title lettering, edges rubbed, corners bit worn, light spotting but overall very good copy. A picture of this book is Yakushi W65. Kaul 751: 'Description of the rocks in the Ganges and Sutlej, the Keeree pass, Hardwar, Mussoorie, Jamnotri, Gangotri, Nahaun, including an account of the ascent of Choor'. The attractive plates include many by J. M. W. Turner and T. Allom. Roberts wrote several books on India and 'wrote the text to several collections of steel-engraved plates on India. . . she produced the best vade-mecum available' (Robinson p. 191).

La seconde partie qui occupe 256p., est une succession de notes du traducteur, particulièrement riches d'informations, sur les plantes, les animaux et la géographie physique. Reliure en plein veau brun d'époque marbré. Dos lisse richement orné de 5 fleurons dans des losanges avec palmettes angulaires et roulettes à la place des nerfs. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Plat supérieur légèrement incurvé en coin bas droit, sinon, très bel exemplaire, quasi exempt de rousseurs avec quelques cahiers légèrement jaunis, une trace de mouillure pâle en coin bas de la page de titre et du feuillet suivant. Les récits de voyages content la première installation des colons en Australie. Lorsque l'empire Britannique perdit ses colonies américaines où toutes sortes de personnes indésirables étaient régulièrement envoyés, il fut choisi d'installer les déportés en Nouvelle Galles du sud (côte orientale Australie). Une escadre de 11 navires, dont 6 affectés au transport des criminels, fut placée sous les ordres du capitaine Arthur Phillip, gouverneur du nouvel établissement. La flotte partit d'Angleterre en mars 1787, atteignit Botany Bay en janvier 1788, et la colonie se fixa à Port Jackson. Le récit, à plus d'un titre passionnant, du chirurgien en chef de l'expédition, narre par le menu le voyage et l'installation des officiers et des déportés dans la nouvelle colonie, ainsi que les rencontres avec les indigènes. Importante relation de voyage sur l'Australie. L'auteur était chirurgien à bord d'un des bâteaux de la flotte britannique qui transportait les condamnés en Australie. Bel exemplaire malgré des auréôles sans gravité dans les marges des premières pages de 1 à 15.
