Perforation stamp to title page and first leaf of Preface pp. iii/iv a few stamps on verso of title page otherwise unmarked. xv516 pp. final page "Errata" illus. w/ folding frontis. map 10 plates 1 folding map 3 engraved plates 6 lithographed plates all present and intact without library markings slightly foxed. Binders' directions provided on p. xv. Eight 8 leaves in Ch. 1 show closed tears extending from fore-edge through margins and into the text in several cases across the leaf to the binding gutter but no loss all professsionally mended with clear archival tape and barely noticeable. No other internal defects excepting mild wear to some corners slight and scattered soiling. Large foldout map of Asia as conquered by Genghis Khan etc. in the 13th-15th centuries "Great Tartary" is detached and laid in; 995 intact with some very slight loss along edges and one fold separated and reattached along one of the two vertical folds with archival tape repairs to blank verso along other folds and some closed tears/chipping along edges; several of the recent archival tape repairs are laid over earlier non-archival tape removing which seemed likely to harm the map; there is one approx. 1" section of archival tape mounted on the front of the map along a fold with all other repairs made on verso only. Book presents "as new" by virtue of rebinding contents VG map VG. Overall a conservatively restored copy that will remain durable for decades of an exceptionally scarce issue. The text was held in the covers by two staples. These have pulled loose leaving the text loose in the covers. The map has also pulled loose from where it was glued onto the back cover with no damage . It also is fine to very fine with the exception of the remains of a penciled note at the top.
