Original black cloth with blind-stamped decoration and image of a ship on each board. Complete but well worn; spine slant corners rubbed through small losses of cloth at head and foot of spine moderate foxing and soiling throughout. A good reference/reading copy. Hall who signed on to the New Bedford whale-ship Condor at the age of 15 suffered so much abuse on board that he and a companion deserted on the coast of Siberia. They spent the winter of 1858-59 at a Russian penal settlement and were rescued the following summer by another New Bedford whaler and taken to Honolulu before returning to New England. "In 1861 Hall published Artic Rovings in an attempt to expoose the abuses of crewmen in the whaling industry. His father making use of letters sent home by his son subsequently brought a lawsuit against Whiteside Captain of the Condor accusing him of abandoning young Hall on the shores of Okhotsk. 1846253662New York 1846. unbound. 1 page 10 x 8 inches New York City December 8 1846. In this letter a salesman has booked travel for a favored client: "I have sent for you by the steam boat CHAMPION which leaves here this afternoon for New Haven marked as you directed by Springfield railroad with three kegs of printing ink." An interesting memento from the days when steamships were owned by the wealthy railroads who attempted to monopolize travel and trade. In this case the steamboat Champion actually the New Champion 1846 - 1851 would leave the Port of New York and set sail up the Long Island Sound eventually entering the Connecticut River bound for New Haven. The passenger could choose to sail as far up as Springfield Massachusetts or transfer for the much faster train at New Haven all owned by Hartford & New Haven Railroads. Now known as Castle Mountain between 1946 and 1979 it was called Mount Eisenhower in honor of the WWII General.<br><br>Poster is in good condition with some edge wear and verso repair. Some minor creasing and foxing. Minor loss in lower right corner. <br><br>Alfred Crocker Leighton 1901 - 1965 was a British born Canadian painter who came from Great Britain and settled in Canada in 1925.
