Second edition revised with engraved illustrations added to this informative memoir of an American doctor following his awarding of Harvard M.D. for a thesis on “Syphilis.†From 1844-1845 he traveled through Paris studying Medicine discussing the dissection and anatomy lectures the differences between American and French medical practices during the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe I along with examinations of the different penal systems hospitals and institutions for the Deaf and Dumb Insane Asylums and more. Originally published as serial observations with the Newark Daily Advertiser they were compiled into the author’s original 1848 “Old Wine in New Bottles†this edition was enhanced with steel engravings. Gardner 1821-1876 graduated Harvard in 1844 with his M.D. finished his A.M. by 1852 after returning from France worked as attending physician to the New York City Dispensary then the Lying-In Asylum District and later a Private Hospital in Bloomingdale. He specialized in obstetrics and sexually transmitted diseases was the first to propose clean water public drinking fountains in New york and also was the first to employ chloroform as an anesthetic during childbirth.
