Mappa tolemaica della regione, originalmente preparata per illustrare il Cl. Ptolemaei Alexandrini, Geographiae Libri Octo, pubblicato prima a Colonia da Gottfried von Kempen (1578), ristampato dallo stesso editore nel 1584 (Van der Krogt 1, 502) e poi da Isaac Elsevier per il Theatrum Geographiae veteris di Petrus Bertius (Leyden 1618). Di tutte le edizioni di Tolomeo, quella di Gerard Kremer (Mercatore), pubblicata nel 1578, e forse tecnicamente la più bella. A questo punto la Geografia di Tolomeo perdeva pero ogni pretesa di “attualità”, laddove lo scopo di Mercatore era quello di produrre un atlante del mondo classico che servisse da complemento al suo atlante moderno (per tale ragione egli aveva tentato di recuperare la forma originale dell’atlante tolemaico, scartandone le moderne accrezioni). L’opera è celebre anche per la sua longevità, poiché le lastre originali risultavano ancora in uso nel 1730, oltre centocinquanta anni dopo la loro incisione. Esemplare tratto dalla Tabulae geographicae Cl: Ptolemei di François Halma, stampata tra Utrecht, Amsterdam e Leida nel 1695, 1698, 1704 (2 tirature) e 1730.Le lastre sono emendate e i cartigli completamenti cambiati; più piccoli e realizzati sopra i precedenti – abrasi – lasciando ampie aree bianche sulla stampa. Ptolemaei Alexandrini, Geographiae Libri Octo, first published in Cologne by Gottfried von Kempen (1578) and then reprinted by the same publisher in 1584 (Van der Krogt 1, 502) and then by Isaac Elsevier for the Petrus Bertius’ Theatrum Geographiae veteris (Leyden 1618). Mercator's interpretation of the 28 Ptolemaic text was possibly one of the truest undertaken up until that time. He had spent 13 years researching, drawing and engraving the maps at much commercial sacrifice to himself, having seen Ortelius's Theatrum and De Jodes Speculum published, to become both technical and commercial successes. In later life he devoted himself to his edition of the maps in Ptolemy's Geographia, reproduced in his own engraving as nearly as possible in their original form. The work is also famous for its longevity, since the original plates were still in use in 1730, over one hundred and fifty years after their engraving. Example taken from the Tabulae geographicae Cl: Ptolemei by François Halma, printed between Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leiden in 1695, 1698, 1704 (2 printings) and 1730. The plates are amended and the cartouches completely changed; smaller and made over the previous ones - erased - leaving large white areas on the print. Copperplate, good condition.

Carta tratta dalla rara raccolta di carte geografiche denominata Atlante Geografico, prima stesura delle opera dell’abate Bartolomeo Borghi, pubblicata in Siena dal Pazzini Carli. Molte delle carte, datate tra il 1788 ed il 1800, sono incise da Agostino Costa e poi successivamente inserite nell’opera Atlante generale dell'ab. Bartolommeo Borghi, pubblicato a Firenze nel 1819.Bartolomeo Borghi, che Vermiglioli (Biografia degli scrittori perugini, 1829) definisce "uno dei migliori geografi dell'Europa", nacque nel 1750 a Monte del Lago, piccola frazione del comune di Magione, in provincia di Perugia, sulle rive del Trasimeno. Ordinato sacerdote nel 1774, trascorse i primi anni del suo mandato nel paese natale, poi a Magione e quindi a Sorbello (Cortona).Appassionato studioso di geografia, applicò dapprima le sue conoscenze all'analisi delle terre a lui più familiari: nel 1770 scrisse Descrizione geografica, fisica e naturale del Lago Trasimeno (che sarà tuttavia data alle stampe per la prima volta solo nel 1821), e nel 1791 pubblicò negli atti dell'Accademia etrusca di Cortona una Dissertazione sopra l'antica geografia dell'Etruria, Umbria e Piceno, arricchendo entrambe le opere di una carta delle regioni descritte. Intanto la sua fama di cartografo, oltre che di geografo, cresceva, tanto da fargli ottenere le nomine a membro delle Accademie Cortonese e Reale di Firenze, e procurargli l'incarico, da parte di Pietro Leopoldo, di delineare la carta del catasto pubblico di Cortona e del contado di Castiglione.Nello stesso tempo gli orizzonti geografici della sua attività si allargavano sensibilmente, e se nell'Atlante Novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni, e scoperte fatte dai più celebri e più recenti cartografi di Antonio Zatta (Venezia 1779-1785) il suo contributo fu ancora legato all'area toscana, nell'Atlante geografico che si pubblicò a Siena da Pazzini Carli tra il 1798 ed il 1800 il Borghi tracciò la maggior parte delle carte e spaziò dalle province del Sud-Est dell'Inghilterra, al Regno di Danimarca, alla Romania.Una sorta di prova generale, quest'ultima, della sua opera più importante, quell'Atlante generale dell'ab. Meanwhile, his fame as a cartographer, as well as a geographer, was growing, so that he get the nomination as a member of the Royal Academies of Florence and Cortona, and give him the job, by Pietro Leopoldo, to outline the paper's public land Cortona and the county of Castiglione.At the same time the geographical horizons of its activities widened considerably, and if in the Atlas Novissimo, illustrated and amplified the observations and discoveries made by the most recent and most famous cartographer Antonio Zatta (Venice 1779-1785) his contribution was still related area of Tuscany, in the Atlas geographic monthly published in Siena by Pazzini Carli between 1798 and 1800 the villages drew most of the cards and spaced from the provinces of South-East of England, the Kingdom of Denmark, Romania.A sort of dress rehearsal, the latter, his most important work, quell'Atlante General of AB. Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Florence in 1819. The Atlas, accompanied by brief descriptions of historical, political, civil and natural to introduce the papers relating to the territories belonging to each United Empire or illustrated, reflects the new geo-political structure implemented by the Congress of Vienna.
Carta geografica dell'isola, per la prima volta pubblicata nel volume “L’isole Piu Famose Del Mondo Descritte Da Thomaso Porcacchi Da Castiglione Aretino E Intagliate Da Girolamo Porro Padovan” di Tommaso Porcacchi (ca. 1532-1576), umanista e letterato originario di Castiglion Fiorentino.Gli interessi geografici coltivati sin dal Pomponio Mela del 1557 diedero vita nel 1572 al trattato, pubblicato dalla società tra il libraio Simone Galignani e l’incisore padovano Girolamo Porro, che si servirono della tipografia di Giorgio Angelieri (con privilegio di 10 anni concesso il 16 luglio 1572). Secondo Valerio (cfr. Valerio-Spagnolo, Sicilia 1477-1861, La Collezione Spagnolo-Patermo in quattro secoli di Cartografia, 2014, p. 163) il volume sarebbe stampato nell’officina di Domenico e Giovan Battista Guerra. Il volume, in formato in quarto, con dedica di Galignani a don Giovanni d’Austria, presenta le magnifiche tavole calcografiche di Porro (una seconda edizione, cospicuamente accresciuta di testo e tavole, usci nel 1576, poi ancora, postume, nel 1590, 1604, 1605, 1620 e 1686). Nella lettera dedicatoria Porro narra di essere stato il promotore dell’operazione e di aver incaricato Porcacchi di scrivere un libro sulle isole, riservandosene l’illustrazione. Il modello e quello degli “isolari”, sul quale però Porcacchi innesta lo spirito delle corografie antiche, aggiungendo per ciascuna isola una descrizione fisica, storica e culturale. La concezione e molto ampia (sono comprese penisole, grandi isole come l’Inghilterra o interi continenti: l’America Settentrionale), ma nel “Prohemio” Porcacchi fornisce un glossario di termini geografici che testimonia lo sforzo di impiegare in maniera corretta la terminologia della disciplina (cfr. Franco Pignatti, Porcacchi Tommaso, in "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani" - Volume 85, 2016). Nel testo vi sono mappe di isole incise su mezza pagina, compreso il planisfero – riduzione della carta murale di Camocio del 1567 e la “carta da navigare con le rotte e i venti, di derivazione gastaldina. Incisione in rame posta nella parte superiore del foglio che contiene anche la parte descrittiva, in ottimo stato di conservazione. The geographical interests cultivated since Pomponio Mela in 1557 gave life to the treatise published in 1572 by the company between the bookseller Simone Galignani and the Paduan engraver Girolamo Porro, who used the typography of Giorgio Angelieri (with the privilege of 10 years July 1572). The volume, with a dedication by Galignani to Don Giovanni d'Austria, presents the magnificent calcographic plates by Porro (a second edition, conspicuously augmented with text and tables, came out in 1576, then again, posthumously, in 1590, 1604, 1605, 1620 and 1686). In the dedicatory letter Porro tells of having been the promoter of the operation and of having entrusted Porcacchi with writing a book on the islands, reserving the illustration. The model is that of the "isolari", on which however Porcacchi inserts the spirit of ancient chorographies, adding a physical, historical and cultural description for each island. The concept is very broad (including peninsulas, large islands such as England or entire continents: North America), but in the "Prohemio" Porcacchi provides a glossary of geographical terms that testifies to the effort to correctly use the terminology of the discipline (see Franco Pignatti, Porcacchi Tommaso, in "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani" - Volume 85, 2016). In the text there are maps of islands engraved on half a page, including the planisphere - reduction of the wall map of Camocio of 1567 and the "carta marina”.Copperplate placed at the top of the sheet also including a descriptive part, in very good condition.

Gli incisori erano Michael Wolgemut, famoso maestro di Albrecht Dürer, e il figliastro Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wolgemut fu il tutore di Albrecht Dürer tra il 1486 e il 1490; recenti studi hanno dimostrato come Dürer abbia collaborato alla realizzazione di quest’opera, poiché alcuni dei tratti hanno somiglianze stupefacenti con quelli dell’Apocalisse; alcune opere sono infatti attribuite al maestro di Norimberga.
