A history of the Nile expedition of 1884-5 taken from author's diary sketch book Each sketch is accompanied by a description of the events leading up to that sketch. The illustrations are lovely. Internally this rare work is very clean and except for the original end paper free of foxing. The volume is complete with one colored sketch map and 37 colored lithographic plates. Although the covers and spine are good only the plates are in great shape. The original pictorial board binding shows wear especially at corners but the cover illustration is all present and clear. Orig. unprinted white spine soiled as expected. RH Porter unknown

Publisher's red cloth with gilt-stamped title and decoration on spine and front board; publisher's emblem blind-stamped on back board. All page edges gilt. Light blue-green endpapers. Series title on spine: "Voyages Extraordinaires." "Les Mondes Connus et Inconnus" -- on front board below title. No date of publication as was usual for Hetzel. "Hachette et Cie." -- on front board indicating this was issued after Hetzel was acquired by Hachette in 1914. The binding found here was used by Hachette in 1914 through 1919. Printed by Gauthier-Villars; listed on the half title verso and the last page with the code 45159. This was the first of the Voyages Extraordinaires by Jules Verne. In Good Condition: lacking lower third of cloth from spine; fraying along edges of the remainder with minor loss at head of spine; corners of boards are rubbed; cloth is somewhat soiled; pages are browning with occasional soiling and foxing; 5-cm. closed tear from fore-edge of pp. 67-68; otherwise pages and plates are clean and tight. Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears partially mended on the verso with archival tape with some minor loss. Vandeleur a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895 the Niger Expedition in 1897 and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district.
