241j1550Toronto: The Cumberland Press. Good. 1988. Privately Published Limited Edition. Paperback. Signed and numbered 74/100 by Neil Peart inside back cover. "And now it was all over. I didn't want to replay it all or relive it again but man- will someone hurry up and figure out a way to slow the good times down But no- even African Time can't make a day last one minute longer." -p 201. Describes his African travel experiences during September of 1987. Neil Peart 1952-2020 was the renowned drummer and main lyricist of the internationally acclaimed Canadian rock band Rush which he joined in 1974. He dedicated this book to his then wife Jacqueline and daughter Selena both of whom left the world prematurely and tragically in the 1990s causing Peart to take a prolonged timeout from his musical career. Rush tribute website Cygnus-X1 suggests this to be one of several books/travelogues authored and privately published by Peart during the 1980's a full decade before he released his first novel. Apparently these books were all produced in very limited quantities and only gifted to friends and family thus rarely found. 205 5 pp. Bibliography. Occasional black and white illustrations by David Bygott. 11" x 8.5". Tight and unmarked with average wear. A sound and precious memento of the the iconic drummer known to his fans as "The Professor". ; Illustrations; 4to; Signed by Author . The Cumberland Press paperback

A cornerstone to any collection of Africana this is one of the earliest and greatest illustrated works on the seminal discoveries to be made on the continent over A hundred year period. This set with the added murray volume rarely encountered in matching binding as here.
With time on his hands and at the urging of a friend Bruce composed this account of his travels on the African continent including comments on the history and religion of Egypt an account of Indian trade a history of Abyssinia and other such material. Although Bruce would not be confused with "a great scholar or a judicious critic. few books of equal compass are equally entertaining; and few such monuments exist of the energy and enterprise of a single traveller" DNB. "The result of his travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography" Cox II p. 389.
Bruce was one of the earliest westerners to search for the source of the Nile. In November of 1770 he reached the source of the Blue Nile and though he acknowledged that the White Nile was the larger stream he claimed that the Blue Nile was the Nile of the ancients and that he was thus the discoverer of its source.
The account of his travels was written twelve years after his journey and without reference to his journals which gave critics grounds for disbelief but the substantial accuracy of the book has since been amply demonstrated.
James Bruce traveled to Egypt in 1768 accompanied by the Italian artist Luigi Balugani. They spent five years in Upper Egypt Abyssinia and in the exploration of the Nile. With the exception of the French surgeon Poncet no European had visited Abyssinia in over 150 years so Bruce's account was of unique importance in providing valuable information on the region to Europeans. The plates based on his own and Balugani's drawings include maps botanical and zoological specimens antiquities artifacts and plans of monuments.
A cornerstone to any collection of Africana this is one of the earliest and greatest illustrated works on the seminal discoveries to be made on the continent over a hundred year period. 1940170773London: British High Command in the East c.1940-43. Greetings and Peace be upon you A rare chit for RAF pilots to carry during the North Africa Campaign 1940-3 in case of being lost or captured. Written for the benefit of British personnel in the field the focus is simple and concise. The first paragraph in English and Arabic presents a simple greeting asking for hospitality. The following gives points of conduct such as "remove footwear before entering their tents" and "do not expect breakfast if you sleep the night. Arabs will give you a mid-day or evening meal". A word list includes translations of "friend" "food" "tired" and "enemy". The document was colloquially known as a "goolie chit" a "throwback from an earlier war when Royal Flying Corps pilots in India and Mesopotamia needed security in the form of a document that promised a reward to anyone who would bring a British aviator back to British lines. It was so called because local tribesmen in the area were said to turn over aviators to the women who castrated them for use as servants" Feast. We have encountered two other issues: one slightly simplified British issue and an American issue carried by all pilots and crewmen of the Twelfth Air Force with a message from President Roosevelt instead of the British High Command in the East. Quarto single-sheet 244 x 173 mm text in Arabic and English on recto only edge-mounted on thick black card within white card mount all on laminate board presented in dark oak frame with conservation acrylic glazing 353 x 280 mm. Sir Richard Burton 1821-90 is well known for his colorful career recorded in numerous books and articles as a diplomat explorer and ethnographer. In 1861 he was appointed consul to Fernando Po now Bioko in Equatorial Guinea remaining there for four years until he was transferred to Brazil. These volumes collate the expeditions and ethnographic observations made during his time there. In his preface Burton writes that the "plain truth" about the African has not been told in Britain declaring that English occupation of West Africa has proved "a remarkable failure." First published in 1876 the second volume recounts a journey made from Fernando Po to Loango Bay and up the Congo River. Of particular interest is the penultimate chapter "The slaver and the missionary in the Congo River" in which Burton expresses his ambivalence towards a European presence in Africa. Volume 2 also includes appendices containing geographical observations. Penzer p. 94; Spink 56; Casada 66: "This work covers the Fan people and the region of the lower Congo. 190522629
Manuscript record of Chinese immigrant workers in the Rose Deep Gold Mine near Johannesburg 996 pages large 4to.; original half leather binding title in gilt on upper cover. The manuscript chronicles the service of 874 Chinese immigrants dating from February 1905 to January 1908. Each miner has a full page listing: registration number name and surname amount earned moneys advanced remittance to China number of shifts worked number of working shifts in month leave sickness accidents desertion unlawful absence deaths repatriation total shifts lost and remarks as to conduct and character. After the Anglo-Boer War production on the gold mines of the Witwatersrand was very low due to a lack of labour. The British government was eager to get these mines back working as quickly as possible as part of their overall effort to rebuild the economy. Much of the local labour had returned to farming and the Governor Lord Milner reluctantly agreed with the assent of the British government to import Chinese coolies each on a three-year contract that terminated with compulsory repatriation. The mines had become unpopular with Africans due to attempts to reduce wages in order to maximise profits. Some mines experimented using whites as unskilled labour but these experiments were unsuccessful as they tended to demand higher wages. On the 19th of June 1904 the first Chinese labourers thus arrived at the Witwatersrand. Between 1904 and 1910 there were almost 64000 Chinese working on the Witwatersrand gold mines near Johannesburg. Most of these contractors were recruited from the Chinese provinces of Zhili Shandong and Henan. This measure was very successful in increasing the production of gold from mining but in the long run it faced stiff resistance from white labour that considered the Chinese unfair competition in terms of skilled and semi-skilled jobs. Chinese labour in the South African Mines met appallingly dangerous condition a lack of sanitation good food and welfare. Herbert Hoover who would become the 31st U.S. president was a director of Chinese Engineering and Mining Corporation CEMC when it became a supplier of coolie labour to South African mines. The first shipment of 2000 Chinese workers arrived in Durban from Qinhuangdao in July 1904. Almost all the Chinese labour was entirely recruited and shipped by CEMC. When the living and working conditions of the labourers became known public opposition to the scheme grew and questions were asked in the British Parliament. The scheme was abandoned in 1911. The mass importation of Chinese to work on the gold mines contributed to the fall from power of the Conservative government in the Britain. However it did stimulate to the economic recovery of South Africa after the Anglo-Boer War by once again making the mines of the Witwatersrand the most productive gold mines in the world. Little is known about the lives of the Chinese men who actually worked in the Witwatersrand gold mines and this is a rare document which sheds light on this largely forgotten page in Imperial history.
