Reliures en plein chagrin aubergine, dos lisses décolorés et éclaircis ornés d'arabesques romantiques dorées, filets dorés en têtes et en queues des dos, roulettes dorées sur les coiffes, encadrement d'un filet doré sur les plats ornementés d'arabesques romantiques estampées à froid, premiers plats frappés en leurs centres de feuilles de laurier dorées entourant la mention dorée "Pension Membré à Versailles", gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, tranches marbrées, liserés dorés en tête et en pieds des coupes, trois coins émoussés, élégantes reliures romantiques de l'époque. 8vo [23 x 16.5 cm]; xiv, 500 pp, colored frontis of Ekoi Girl in Fatting House costume, numerous illustrations from photos, folding drwg of wall decoration, folding map colored in outline (short tear at fold), tables, index. original green cloth with mounted illustration on cover as issued, gilt title lettering on spine and front cover, lower corner bumped, with only slight rubbing, but a clean, bright fine copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author travelled extensively in the Oban District of Southern Nigeria and part of the Cameroons to study the Ekoi people as well as the natural history of the area. Included are chapters on religion, Egbo, Jujus, position of women, birth customs, divination, witchcraft, funeral ceremonies, war, government, folk-lore, etc, with detailed appendices on taboos, clubs, anthropometrics, orthography, grammar, vocabularies, botany, zoology, mineralogy, meteorology, geography.
