13613Brodrick's letter from 22 Cockspur Street London England on cancelled letterhead of 141 Gloucester Road SW. 9 January 1899. Reitz's typescript: Pretoria. 14 November 1898. Brodrick's Autograph Letter Signed to Mathers: 1p. 12mo. Good on lightly-aged paper. 'Dear Sir - It may interest you to read the enclosed written by Ex-President Reitz whose "renderings" of "Maid of Athens" & "Tam O'Shanter" are so well known. Somebody once said that "the only thing that doesn't lose by 'translation' is a Bishop" and as a rule this is correct but I think in this instance I have gained'. In a postscript he asks for the return of the 'M.S.' underlined twice. The typescript of Reitz's poem possibly made towards publication in 'South Africa' is 1p. foolscap 8vo with a number of manuscript emendations including the deletion of the first letter of the author's initials 'T. W. R.' at the end of the poem. Titled 'O! Waar is Min Gezoute Paert. vertaling van Brodricks "O give me back my Salted Steed".' The poem is in four stanzas. Also present are two newspaper cuttings: the first headed ''AFRICANDER POETRY' and the second beginning 'Dr. Francois Willem Reitz was in the eighties a Judge of and subsequently President of the Orange Free State.' Brodrick was born in Gosport and emigrated to South Africa in 1859 settling in Pretoria where he worked as a merchant and part-time gold prospector. He wrote a weekly supplement to De Volksstem entitled 'The Tse Tse Fly' and was the author of the non-fiction work 'To Ophir Direct: or The South African Gold Fields' 1868. His 'Fifty Fugitive Fancies in Verse' 1875 was the first book of poetry to be published north of the Vaal River. 9069Burlington Eastbourne 13 Sept. 1898 and no date 1890s. 1898 letter 2pp. 4to closed tear on fold but mainly good text complete and clear. "Here the answer to that vicious article in the Desdener Zeitung" perhaps he had enclosed a letter or article - no longer present. He asks for a careful copy and that Armstrong sign it and send it to the newspaper. "They must publish it on the strength of p.11 of our press law" subject to legal penalty. It will make a betetr impression if you sign it as I have spoken in it of my own riskssubscription of £2000 etc.etc". He asks for another copy to be sent to various individuals named and also copies of "the article of the Ruenye-gold in the African review which is first-class for us as it says a prospecting expedition for four months is sure to pay . . . we shall be the first in the field next season." He thinsk they should get a Berlin bank to take "the whole thing up" the expedition presumably. H emakes further arrangements about the copying and sending. 1890s Note He says "Think I settled that Frankfurt Zeit. etc. business all right." In a postscript he apologises for missing an appointment. Two items Burlington, Eastbourne, 13 Sept. 1898 and no date [1890s]. unknown
13011On letterhead of Morley's Hotel Trafalgar Square London WC. 24 March 1897. 1p. 12mo. In good condition with slight spotting to extremities laid down on leaf removed from autograph album. 'I am sorry that we have missed each other on the occasions you have called. My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M. on Sunday when if you can manage to call once more I shall be delighted to see you & revive our mutual recollections of old days.' According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.' On letterhead of Morley's Hotel, Trafalgar Square, London, WC. 24 March 1897. unknown
