Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears partially mended on the verso with archival tape with some minor loss. Vandeleur a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895 the Niger Expedition in 1897 and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district. He was killed in 1901 when 250 Boers fired on his train. Methuen & Company hardcover

Later inscription on flyleaf "Sir Matthew Nathan from L. A. Barker." Nathan was colonial governor serving in Sierra Leone Gold Coast Hong Kong Natal and Queensland. Contemporary signature on title page of "F. Cotton." "Issued with a view of affording information respecting the country reserved for the 1820 settlers which the editor asserts is not to be found in other works of South Africa" Mendelssohn. Most of the material appeared earlier in Narrative of the Loss of the Ship Hercules 1798 where Stout encountering a gale which rendered the ship unmanageable ran the ship ashore on the African coast. Remarkably all the crew reached the shore safely and the native Caffres were friendly and led the crew to Dutch settlements. First edition of this work largely written by Mary Jobe Akeley recounting the Akeley-Eastman-Pomeroy Expedition to Africa in 1926. She has included here the long hunt for the 16-foot tall giraffe a family of 14 friendly lions in Tanganyika and the death of Carl Akeley 1864-1926 who sickened and died of fever on Mount Mikeno in the Belgian Congo. Mary Jobe 1878-1966 completed the expedition mapped parts of the Belgian Congo Kenya and Tanzania finished collecting specimens for the American Museum of Natural History as well as plant specimens and hundreds of photographs. Mary Jobe is well remembered for her Camp Mystic founded in 1916 for girls aged 8 to 18 who promoted healthy experiences in camping boating swimming horseback riding dancing and field athletics and was even visited by such explorers and naturalists as Vilhjalmur Stefannson Martin & Osa Johnson and others.
