The purpose of these handbooks was to supply a vast amount of information on various parts of the world. .and the final result shows that the compilers certainly met their goals. Excellent lengthy bibliography in rear. This volume was in fact produced and printed for official purposes during the war of 1939/45. A beautiful copy save for a plate that notes it belonged to the Borough of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Reserve stock. There are very faint stamps on top/bottom and front edges and one on verso of title page but no other markings. And it would appear that the book sat in the Museum never read. Mary Henrietta Kingsley 1862-1900 was an English ethnographer writer and explorer whose travels throughout West Africa and resulting work helped shape European perceptions of both African cultures and British colonialism in Africa. A follow-up to her Travels in West Africa 1897 this ambitious book outlined a new plan for the administration of the West African colonies that would give control to European trading interests rather than bureaucrats while incorporating African opinion and leaving native cultural legal and social organizations intact DNB.
