Slight bumping to spine ends of gray boards with decoration on front board showing a soldier and a palm tree. A previous original owner's name on f/ep some yellowing to the pages a small tear to top corner of map on page 86 Frontier to Morogoro where it is fixed to the pages but with no damage to the printing on the map itself and no damage to the two smaller maps on pp124 and 172. Otherwise a good clean tight copy of this first edition of this hard-cover book. Deals with the author's wartime service in the German East Africa campaign from 1915-18. Three Years in Upper Asia. mimeographed translated from Pelliot's article in L'Illustration. TEN Original photos inserted in text presumably these were originals from the magazine illustration. Paul Pelliot made an important three year journey through Central Asia Chinese Turkestan and Western China. Soon after his return he related details of his journey and that speech was printed in L'Illustration. Henry Getty translated that article and obtained original photos to insert. It seems like only a small number of copies could have been printed. Half leather over marbled boards marbled endpapers. Other than some browning around the very edges of the sheets this is in VG to vg condition and RARE. Privately printed hardcover
