A picture o 'The materials for this work were notes taken during visits made to the principal islands lying off the west coast of Africa, in the course of fifteen voyages to and from South and West Africa, between 1871 and 1882' (author's note). The author describes the geography, nature, history, productions, climate, etc of St. Helena, Ascension, Fernado Po, Isle de Los, St. Vincent, San Antonio, Goree, Grand Canary, Tenerife, Madeira. No copies were traced at auction in the last 25 years.

Longtemps attendu par les collectionneurs, les spécialistes et les amoureux de l’art, l’ouvrage réunit les œuvres en bronze, inédites pour la plupart, qui ont retenu le regard passionné, attentif et infatigable de Syrop au fil de quatre décennies. Architecte de profession et collectionneur d’instinct, Arnold Syrop a fait œuvre de pionnier en s’intéressant à ce domaine particulier de la culture matérielle africaine et en développant ce que Susan Kloman qualifie dans son introduction « d’œil parmi les meilleurs » en matière de bronzes africains. Mary Henrietta Kingsley 1862-1900 was an English ethnographer writer and explorer whose travels throughout West Africa and resulting work helped shape European perceptions of both African cultures and British colonialism in Africa. A follow-up to her Travels in West Africa 1897 this ambitious book outlined a new plan for the administration of the West African colonies that would give control to European trading interests rather than bureaucrats while incorporating African opinion and leaving native cultural legal and social organizations intact DNB.
