1749166191749 À Paris, chez Didot, 1749. Réédition en petit format de ce volume paru chez le même éditeur au format in-4 en 1747. Comprenant 13 gravures hors texte et un bandeau. Cette édition diffère de l'originale par le choix des illustrations, les 11 cartes de la première édition étant remplacées ici par 12 gravures de la faune africaine. Seule la gravure intitulée "Circoncision des Nègres" est commune aux deux éditions. In-12 de 486 pp., 10 x 17 cm., avec un lexique français-jalof-fouli (pp. 101-118). Reliure plein veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné de motifs "à la toile d'araignée", pièce de titre bordeaux, toutes tranches rouges. Entre 1746 et 1759, labbé Prévost publie l'"Histoire générale des voyages", un ensemble imposant à partir dune compilation anglaise de John Green, "A new general collection of voyages and travels". Prévost fait plus qu'une simple traduction : il harmonise, réajuste, ajoute dautres chroniques de voyageurs et des liens historiques, supprime des passages, fait refaire les cartes et les gravures. Il abandonne au quinzième volume. Dautres prendront sa succession, le vingtième et dernier tome paraissant seulement en 1802. Grand succès auprès de ses contemporains, cette entreprise qui participe de leffort commercial et colonial de la France est également très soutenue par le pouvoir royal. Dos un peu craquelé, coiffe supérieure et coins émoussés. Intérieur très frais et exempt de rousseurs. Bel exemplaire, malgré les défauts signalés.

FIRST EDITION AND A VERY EARLY ACCOUNT OF A BRITISH WOMAN'S TIME IN AFRICA. The author lived for several years in Sierra Leone. She informally tells us of the hardships and discomforts but also provides much on the missionaries the climate the natural attributes of the area the slave traders and of the native peoples. I am therefore giving myself the pleasure of sending to you a copy of the St. Helena Spirituals which not only has a number of new songs but has a foreword that I am sure you will find of interest. I am Very Truly yours George Foster Peabody." The letter is paper-clipped to the right front flyleaf leaving a faint impression on the title page. George Foster Peabody's calling card is neatly affixed.<br /> <br /> Outhwaite worked as a consultant anthropologist and author. He was a staff member of the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial from 1923 to 1928 where one of his fields of interest was American race relations.<br /> <br /> Peabody was raised in Columbus Georgia and moved to New York shortly after the Civil War where he became a banker and philanthropist. He was a social activist and major benefactor of the University of Georgia. The Peabody award for excellence in journalism was named after him. He also had an association with the author of this book Nicholas G.J. Ballanta who was a Sierra Leonean music scholar composer and educator who conducted field research of the music of West Africa in the early 20th Century. Peabody persuaded Ballanta to visit Alabama Georgia and South Carolina to better understand the music of African-Americans and funded Ballanta's field research from 1924 to 1926 in Gambia Sierra Leone Gold Coast Ghana and Nigeria.
