Later nineteenth century green quarter calf over dark blue-green boards spine faded to brown blind ruled compartments gilt lettered direct to two sections ownership inscription of Owen Jones St. Ishmael's Vicarage to the front free endpaper dated October 1858 to the front free endpaper his name and that of his wife Augusta Frederica inscribed and dated 1884 to the head of the title page. Folding tinted lithographic frontispiece portrait 23 plates - 21 wood engraved and 2 tinted lithographs 19 engravings in the text 1 folding section plus 2 folding maps one in a pocket at the rear. Spine faded to brown some light edge wear occasional foxing mostly on and adjacent to the plates a decent copy overall. Covering the first of Livingstone's three major expeditions in which he followed the Zambesi river discovering the Victoria Falls in the process as well as the Shire and Ruyuma rivers ranging from Angola in the west to Mozambique in the east. "Livingstone's services to African geography. are almost unequalled. he explored vast regions of central Africa many of which had never been seen by white men before." The issue points on the early appearances of this work are open to conjecture with no definitive precedence established between copies with some tinted lithographs as here or those solely illustrated with wood engravings. Tissue guarded frontis and lithographed title page. 20 tinted lithographs in total and colour map. Bound in 3/4 black calf over black cloth with gilt lettered red morocco label to second compartment and gilt designed flat bands. The cloth and leather is scuffed and rubbed in several places a little heavier rubbing to foot of spine and to the board tips. All edges marbled with marbled endpapers. Sporadic foxing throughout with heavier foxing and spotting to the frontis and title pages. Plates are clean and the text is generally clean the book in a tight and square binding. Very good copy.
