A handsome and tight copy of this early edition ; Brown buckram boards with decorative blindstamped pattern. David Livingstone 1813-1873 was raised religiously and later accepted a job with the London Missionary Society that sent him to Southern Africa to build three missionaries. In 1849 he went on his first expedition to Lake Ngami. In 1851 took another expedition to the Chobe and Zambesi Rivers. Later he visited the "Mosi-oa-tunya Falls" which he named "Victoria Falls". Blind stamped border decorations to front and back and a blind stamped lion to center front and back. Book is tight and square except for front cover which is cleanly detached. Spine has diagonal missing piece to top corner and corners are mildly rubbed. Interior clean and sharp except for minor spotting to tissue guarded frontispiece of lion being shot. In this book Livingstone describes his travel and work as a missionary to the indigenous people in Central and South Africa. Through the mid-19th-century South Africa was completely unknown to Europeans so Livingstone's mission brought light to more than just spreading the gospel. The work deals with customs languages animal and plant biology geology topography and mineralogy. "The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank" PMM 341. </p><p>Livingstone discovered the Zambesi River and Victoria Falls which he named parts of Angola and Mozambique; met with and observed the Hottentot.
