"The relationship between art and life has been of overriding importance in the work of David Hockney who has perhaps enjoyed greater popularity than any other British artist this century. Here Marco Livingstone traces those connections from the beginning of the artist's career in the early 1960s through to the more recent works that have contributed to Hockney's international reputation. These include his photocollages and highly acclaimed stage designs for the opera not to mention his embrace of technology - namely the fax drawings and color laser prints - which show the continuing preoccupation with invention and artifice that has made the artist's work at once popular and enduring." -bookdepository. 1908176561Westminster: The Universities' Mission to Central Africa 1908. First edition first impression of this collection of speeches given to the Senate House in Cambridge by David Livingstone in 1857 1859 and 1907. The two speeches given in 1857 were important stimuli to the formation of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa who pioneered the training of African priests in the Anglo-Catholic Church and set up the bishoprics of Zanzibar and Malawi. David Livingstone first addressed the Senate House on 4 December 1857 followed by a lecture at the town hall the next day. In these speeches he implored his audience to help fund and staff missionary work in Africa decrying that there was a lack of qualified and enthusiastic Englishmen willing to proselytize in the region: "It is deplorable to think that one of the noblest of our missionary societies the Church Missionary Society is compelled to send to Germany for missionaries whilst other societies are amply supplied. Let this stain be wiped off" p. 14. His words were published shortly afterwards as Dr Livingstone's Cambridge Lectures 1858 and then again in a revised edition in 1860. This present volume meanwhile was released to mark the 50th anniversary of the lectures in 1908. Along with reprints of the two original speeches and half-tone plates of Livingstone the Senate House and the Master of Clare College Edward Atkinson this volume also includes two additional pieces. The first is a report of a meeting of the Mission to Central Africa on 1 November 1859 which recorded the results of the first year of the organization's existence and the resolutions to continue funding it. The second describes a meeting of the organization on 4 December 1907 the 50th anniversary of Livingstone's first speech in Cambridge. This meeting included delegates from the African bishoprics themselves such as Reverend F. Weston the Canon of Zanzibar. This work was issued in two bindings one of parchment-backed boards and one of printed wrappers. It is scarce in both formats. Provenance: from the library of Reverends Herbert Maynard Smith 1869-1949 and Outram Smith 1871-1954. The two were both Anglican clerics theologians and missionaries. Maynard in particular was connected to the Mission to Central Africa writing the biography Frank Bishop of Zanzibar in 1926. Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of David Livingstone 2 plates.
