2003375704158 pp. Situated farther west than any other Confederate state Texas would prove itself a valuable partner against the Union. Texas citizens raised scores of infantry cavalry and artillery regiments which served in all theaters of war. John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade First Fourth and Fifth Regiments earned numerous laurels fighting in Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania. At the Wilderness they refused to allow General Robert E. Lee to lead a charge against the enemy grasping the reins of his horse and guiding him to the rear until safe. Texas regiments also fought gallantly in the Western Theater-at the battles of Vicksburg Chickamauga Atlanta and Franklin. Texas units did great service in the Trans-Mississippi. In Louisiana they fought at Mansfield Pleasant Hill and in the Red River Campaign. They defended their home state at Galveston Sabine Pass and Palmito Ranch. Texans even went as far as New Mexico to fight the enemy. Twenty officers from Texas became generals in the Confederacy. John Bell Hood the most famous fought gallantly at Antietam Gettysburg and Chickamauga. He would rise from Colonel of the Fourth Texas Infantry to Lieutenant General commanding the Army of Tennessee. This volume was written by Oran M. Roberts who commanded the Eleventh Texas Infantry. After hostilities ended Roberts served in the United States Congress and as Governor of the Lone Star State. The publishers have painstakingly indexed the Texas volume adding tremendous value to an already valuable resource for researchers and students of the Civil War in general and Texas during the Civil War in particular.<br /> eBooksOnDisk.com paperback
