Texts in English and Afrikaans. - With a few private photographs dating from 1941. The cards show views from: Kaapstad, Cape Town, Transvaal, Blaauwberg, Mowbray, Kaappunt, Simonstad, Stellenbosch, Namakwaland, Swellendam, Die Paarl, Oudtshoorn, Port Elizabeth, Komgha, Durban, Pretoria, Goudstad, Johannesburg, Suid-Rhodesie, Swaziland, etc. binding a bit rubbed, Some pages a bit foxy. Otherwise very good condition.
8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece (original tissue guard present), 31 plates and 2 large coloured folding maps at rear, free endpapers browned, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original red cloth, upper board lettered in gilt, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a very good, bright, crisp copy. Brown served as naturalist on an expedition sent by the US Government to the west coast of Africa in 1889, but remained as collector, big-game hunter, gold seeker, landowner, citizen and solder during seven years' participation in the early development of Rhodesia.
