Pubblicato nel 1922, questo libro è il frutto di una ricerca sul terreno condotta nelle isole Trobriand (Papua-Nuova Guinea), presso società di orticoltori che praticavano anche la pesca e l'allevamento di maiali a fini cerimoniali. Centrale nello studio di Malinowski è il sistema di scambi detto Kula ring che si svolgeva - e si svolge ancora - tra una trentina di isole, stabilendo rapporti di partenariato tra individui appartenenti a società diverse. Oggetto dello scambio sono collane e braccialetti privi di utilità pratica, ma carichi di valore simbolico. Il richiamo agli Argonauti dell'Antichità classica nel titolo si riferisce ai viaggi compiuti su canoe decorate che stabiliscono i contatti tra donatori e donatari. Introduzione di Giancarlo M. G. Scoditti.
