Ce fut un travail de très longue haleine, si l'on se rappelle qu'avant la fin du XIVe siècle, des groupes arabes nomadisaient déjà dans la région du lac Tchad, et que, durant ce dernier demi-siècle, leur chroniqueur a lui-même inlassablement transhumé, en Afrique et en Europe, entre traditions orales, archives et documents écrits à repérer, à déchiffrer, à traduire, en des temps et des lieux divers, au gré des circonstances, - sans autre patronage scientifique que celui d'une obstination compétente et parfaitement désintéressée. Tous ces travaux de première main aboutissent à une oeuvre magistrale, dont j'invite lecteur ou lectrice à consulter d'abord le détail des titres, au début du livre. Pour reconstituer les faits postérieurs au XVIIIe siècle, l'auteur a interrogé à la fois les acteurs (quand certaines de leurs lettres ou déclarations ont pu être conservées) et des témoins. Parmi ceux-ci, certains ont rédigé eux-mêmes le récit de ce qu'ils avaient vu et entendu. Dans de nombreux cas, les témoignages - émanant de personnes aujourd'hui défuntes - ont été recueillis par les consuls britanniques et français de Tripoli et de Benghazi.
