Lagos a region of present-day Nigeria was one of the principal centers of the slave trade. Great Britain took control of Lagos in 1861 and established it as a colony in the following year. In 1866 it became a portion of the West African Settlements subject to the Governor-in-Chief of Sierra Leone. In 1874 it was added to the Gold Coast Colony but became a separate colony in 1886. In 1906 it was amalgamated with the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. This was the second compilation of Lagos ordinances. The other two were published in 1874 and 1902. The Reichsgerichtsbibliothek Imperial Court of Justice Library was at its peak Germany's largest and most important law library with 170000 works in its collection before the outbreak of the First World War. 7756helles Holz, Metall und Material. Die Figur ist aus einem Stück geschnitzt und mit Plastik(?)ketten an den Handgelenken und um den Bauch geschmückt. Gleichzeitig ist ein Metallring eingearbeitet. Die Figur zeigt eine weibliche Person, mit den für die Yoruba typischen Wangentätowierungen (in Form von Kerben dargestellt). Im Stamm der Yoruba ist die Verehrung der Zwillingsfiguren IBEDJI stark in der Kultur verbreitet. Die Yorubas zeichnen sich durch eine überdurchschnittliche Rate von Zwillingsgeburten aus. Die hohe Kindersterblichkeit hat dazu geführt, das anstelle eines verstorbenen Zwillings diese Figuren auftreten. Sie müssen von dem überlebenden Zwilling oder der Mutter sorgsam gepflegt werden. Sie werden gefüttert, gekleidet und symbolisch gewaschen. Das Alter der Skulptur lässt sich nicht genau bestimmen, vermutlich ist sie etwa 40 bis 50 Jahre alt. Gutes Exemplar. Leichte Spannungsrisse an der Figur und dem Sockel. Good copy. Das Foto zeigt die Figur.
