Sehr gutes Exemplar; Einband stw. minimalst berieben. - Englisch. - A listing of popular literature published in Nigeria between the 1940s and 1980, reflecting its transition from a colonial society to an independent state. (Verlagstext) // 'Market literature' in the sense of popular, inexpensive, locally-produced booklets sold in general markets is to be found in various parts of the world. It is, however, the Nigerian form of such literature, also known as 'Onitsha market literature', that has attracted most attention since its discovery in the 1960s by European and North American scholars. For the purposes of this bibliography, Nigerian market literature has been defined as booklets written by Nigerian authors for Nigerian readers (mostly in English but also a few in some vernacular languages), which are printed and distributed by small, local, self-financing entrepreneurs. They are almost invariably stapled in ornamented card covers. The main genres within this literature are fiction, works on current events, plays, manuals of social etiquette, language primers, history, letter-writing, marriage and sexual relations generally, biography, poems, religious tracts, collections of proverbs and works on traditional customs and money-making. The British Library's collection of Nigerian market literature began with some thirty items purchased from a London bookshop in 1971. In 1978 a set of 129 booklets which duplicated items held by the School of Oriental and African Studies was purchased, already bound in seven volumes arranged by subject. ... Gutes Exemplar; der illustr. Einband etwas berieben. - Jens Jahn (Einleitung)
