A mani nude si batte contro le atrocità di una guerra in cui lo stupro è utilizzato come un'arma da tutti gli schieramenti e il corpo della donna si è trasformato in un nuovo campo di battaglia. Colette Braeckman, grande specialista del Congo, raccoglie la testimonianza fuori dal comune del dottor Mukwege, che in questi anni ha vissuto gli orrori della guerra in prima linea, sfiorando la morte più di una volta. Attraverso il racconto dell'uomo che ripara le donne, e che incessantemente è costretto a ricominciare tutto da capo, le sequenze del disastro acquistano nuova luce e soprattutto nuove ombre. Un piccolo "corso di storia" tra i moventi sotterranei dei signori della guerra senza fede né legge, le ambiguità del mondo della cooperazione, le colpevoli mancanze della comunità internazionale e la sorte riservata ai più deboli, popolazione inerme vittima dei saccheggi, bambini assoldati da mercenari senza scrupoli, e le donne, che pagano il prezzo più alto sulla propria pelle. Il risultato è un'opera che non può lasciare indifferenti, il resoconto spietato di una delle grandi tragedie ignorate dei nostri tempi, e il ritratto di un eroe moderno che ha consacrato la sua vita a un ideale, prendersi cura dei più bisognosi, diventare medico, essere un muganga.
