Dessinée par A. Vuillemin, géographe, 1838.” Resoconto di un viaggio in Abissinia e nello Yemen durato due anni, dal 1835 al 1837, effettuato dai giovani francesi Edmund Combes e Maurice Tamisier. Tale viaggio contribuì ad aprire la vasta area etiopica all’influenza francese e a controbilanciare l’influenza degli Inglesi, già presenti in Aden. Per arrivare fino al regno di Choa, Combes et Tamisier visitarono Axum, Adowa, Galla, Debra-Tabor, il lago di Tana, Gondar, ecc. Questa dettagliata relazione del viaggio è naturalmente arricchita dalla storia del paese e da approfonditi commenti sugli usi, costumi, credenze, forme di governo, commerci delle popolazioni incontrate. Gli ultimi capitoli sono dedicati agli errori commessi da europei precedentemente arrivati in Abissinia: Bruce, Valentia e Salt. "Edizione originale". Cfr. Gay,2616. 8vo., First Edition, with title-vignette and illustrations by Bays in the text; original pictorial wrappers, small surname lettered on upper wrapper, covers very faintly age-browned else a remarkably bright, clean copy, now housed in a custom-made solander case. This rare and hilarious novel, delightfully illustrated by Bernard Bays, is set against the background of the Abyssinian campaign of WWII. Juma is an optimistic African employed as lorry driver who attributes the British Army's success largely to his own intervention in the conflict. A LOVELY COPY OF A RARE WORK NOW SAFELY PRESERVED FOR THE FUTURE.
First edition, 8vo (200 x 120), xvi, 434, [14]pp., endpapers lightly waterstained and just impinging onto title, cont. full calf, joints slightly split otherwise a nice copy. This was Campbell's first original work, and purports to be an account of travels made in about 1670. In fact it is a compilation of facts relating to the topography, natural products, political conditions, and manners and customs of the countries supposed to be visited, which are held together by a thread of fictitious autobiography. It was of Dr. Campbell, LL.D., that Johnson said "I am afraid he has not been in the inside of a church for many years; but never passes a church without pulling off his hat. This shews that he has good principles", and on another occasion to Joseph Warton "[he is] the richest author that ever grazed the common of literature". La mappa si presenta stampata in due grandi fogli di mm 580x780 ognuno, applicati all'epoca su tela a stacchi. Basata su fonti inglesi, la carta è adattata per un pubblico italiano infatti nell'angolo in basso a sinistra su due colonne la terminologia inglese viene tradotta in italiano per permettere un'adeguata lettura della raffigurazione geografica. Sotto al titolo sono riportate le scale grafiche, che si ripetono anche nel secondo foglio. Per quanto riguarda lo stato di conservazione la parte superiore leggermente brunita e con piccole macchie rispetto a quella inferiore, complessivamente molto buono.

L'incisione è caratterizzata da una gradevole acquerellatura confinale coeva. Leggere macchie nel margine che non compromettono il generale ottimo stato di conservazione. La carta si trova inserita nel terzo volume dell'opera "Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni" pubblicato nel 1792, che venne commissionato al Cassini dalla Calcografia Camerale di Roma. Successivamente vennero pubblicati il secondo ed il terzo volume rispettivamente nel 1797 e nel 1801.
