Conosciuto come cartografo olandese per il sua opera cartografica monumentale in sette volumi “Atlas Historique” pubblicata ad Amsterdam con i suoi fratelli. Mappa piegata editorialmente dell'Africa nord-orientale, del Mar Rosso e della penisola arabica e mostra le divisioni politiche e i regni. Il Nilo ha origine nelle montagne vicino al L. de Dambee. (Viaggi in Africa Orientale - Esplorazioni - Etiopia meridionale - Abissinia - Somalia - Letteratura coloniale) In 8°, legatura editoriale in piena tela ocra con titoli impressi in oro al dorso ed al piatto anteriore, guardie in carta decorata, pp. 282,(2). con 3 appendici, 6 carte geografiche a colori ripiegate fuori testo, una pianta topografica a colori fuori testo, 158 ill. fotografiche su tavole fuori testo. Nel 1910 al Citerni fu affidato dal Ministero per gli Affari Esteri il comando di una spedizione destinata a definire la frontiera tra i possedimenti italiani della Somalia e le provincie sud-orientali dell'Impero etiopico in base al trattato stipulato il 16 luglio 1908 dai due governi. La missione raggiunse i confini il 15 marzo 1911 ed iniziò le operazioni geodetiche che si prolungarono per molti mesi e che furono sospese a causa di una rivolta fra le popolazioni dell'Uebi-Scebeli. Verranno rilevati ben 1600 Km. di frontiera, notevoli anche i risultati ottenuti nei campi della geografia fisica, della geologia, della zoologia, della botanica e dell'etnografia. Leggere tracce di ossidazione lungo i tagli ed alle carte geografiche, per altro bell'esemplare, solido e ben conservato.

Edizione originale rara che raccoglie le interessantissime note di viaggio di questo irrequieto personaggio che, dopo molte vicissitudini in italia, parti' nel 1882, in compagnia del naturalista Buscalioni, per un viaggio che dall'Egitto lo porto' a Gedda, Suakim e Massaua. Da qui, in compagnia di mercanti greci, raggiunse la regione dei Bogos, poi Kalameta, Kassala, Ghedaref, Metema e poi Galabat. Da qui, grazie anche all'intercessione del medico napoletano Alfieri, prosegui' per Debra Beheran e Let Marefia', dove visito' la tomba dell'esploratore Antinori. Nel 1883 raggiunse con pochi servi e un revolver, la localita' di Ghera dove riesumo' le spoglie di Chiarini, morto 4 anni prima in circostanze misteriose. Nel 1884 rientro' in Italia dove seppelli' nuovamente i resti del Chiarini.

The earliest Whittingham/Chiswick Press edition was apparently 1806 (see Courtney, p.89) after which that well-known house produced several editions for various consortia of leading booksellers. The present edition was printed for R. Jennings, Poultry; T. Tegg, Cheapside; A K Newman & Co., Leadenhall Street [all of London]; J Sutherland, Edinburgh and Richard Griffin and Co., Glasgow. It should be noted that this is not the relatively common issue of the same date produced by Whittingham for Sharpe of Piccadilly with illustrations after Westall. A delightful and expertly restored copy of an uncommon and most attractive edition.
