A rare original coastal survey of the Golden Isles area and includes Jekyll Island and Little Cumberland Island<br/> <br/> Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline create nautical charts of the coast and help increase maritime safety since its founding and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. In addition this agency worked to survey and produce detailed maps and renderings of the U.S. coast. These nautical survey maps commonly referred to as "T-sheets" provide fascinating insights into the history of the United States coastline which has and will continue to shift. These maps are the most important data source for understanding the physical and ecological characteristics of the U.S. shoreline. The present map is a highly detailed and accurate sea chart of the Golden Isles area and is an important historical view of the developing Georgia. First title page has light bug damage upper left edge. Moderate toning to the text. Part of the text block was trimmed resulting in minor loss of page headings. Previous owner ink stamp "Lawrence B. Custer Attorney At Law Marietta Georgia" on the right front flyleaf. Katherine H. Custer 1999 written below the first inscription on the right front flyleaf. 186235238Putnam County Ga: J. A. Turner 1862. First Edition. Newspaper. Good. 12" x 9" newspaper. Pages 57-64. Pages uncut at top edge. Very light toning to the issue. Front page lead article is titled "Educated Negroes." Other contents include stories misc. news and several advertisments. In March of 1862 Joel Chandler Harris future folklorist author of Uncle Remus and several other works started as a a typesetter for the newspaper "The Countryman". Harris lived at Turnwold Plantation near Eaton Georgia throughout the War. The paper ceased in 1866. In 1876 Henry Grady of the Atlanta Constitution hired Harris as a journalist. J. A. Turner unknown

Photograph shows horse drawn carts people and lamp fixture in the background. Photograph in good condition.<br /> <br /> Construction on the hotel began in 1901 and was finished in 1903. It was located downtown Atlanta on a city block bounded by Peachtree Street Luckie Street Forsyth Street and Williams Street. The hotel closed in 1965 and was demolished in the same year. The Equitable Building in Atlanta now occupies the former site of the hotel. unknown unknown

The text touches briefly on fees and governing rules and extensively outlines the aims of the organization - the promotion of the arts sciences and literature the publication of a journal the establishment of a laboratory and lyceum and "an adequate system for the care of all unable to work and whatever may be practicable to improve the sanitary conditions of the world and promote the development of mind and the physical moral and spiritual interests and happiness of mankind.".
