Scarce. One bibliographer proclaims this work as a "most elaborate of overland journals." Read was a physician who kept a detailed diary of his overland journey in 1850 published in this book for the first time along with some of his letters from that trip and a second trip to California via Panama in 1863. The folding map shows the overland route of the Jefferson-California company to California. "Read's journal begins in Independence Missouri on May 1 1850. They crossed the Sierra Nevada by way of Carson Pass and arrived in Placerville on August 18. On October 18 the gold seeker followed the journal with a detailed letter back home summarizing the trip and giving a stiff warning to all about California's moral depravity" Kurutz. Highly technical in some areas with closeup photographs and oddly basic in others one illustration shows 6 forms of adhesives each with a crude image of powders solids pastes liquids etc. Other sections are quite practical with do's and don'ts of manufacturing a fingerprint on the product is noted as reducing load carrying-ability by 70%.<br/><br/>A scarce publication with only 2 copies listed in OCLC as of this listing.
