Williams Worked For The 1908 Presidential Campaign Of Socialist Eugene Debs. Then Williams Returned To His Main Profession As A Minister Of The Maverick Square Congregational Church In East Boston 1908 To 1914. However He Did Not Abandon The Labor And Social Issues At All. In 1912 Williams Raised Money And Spoke Up For The Workers During The 1912 Textile Strike In Lawrence Massachusetts. Williams First Met John Reed Whose Acquaintance Played A Role In His Upcoming Interest In Russia And Then His Trip To This Far Overseas Country. Williams First Came Into Contact With The Bolsheviks In 1917 As A Correspondent For The New York Post. He Attended The Storming Of The Winter Palace Met And Became Close Friends With Vladimir Lenin And Stayed In The Country Until 1918. Upon His Return To The United States He Worked As A Pro-Soviet And Communist Activist.1 Williams Was A Vocal Opponent Of The Allied Intervention In The Russian Civil War And Deployment Of American Troops On Russian Soil Stating "I Never Ceased To Feel Shame For The Role My Country Played In This Joint Effort To Strangle Bolshevism In Its Cradle And Socialism For Good And All."2 He Eventually Volunteered For Service In The Red Army And Was Placed In Charge Of Organizing An International Legion. This work contains his proposalsfor a svstem of state education in Russiaincluding reports of various commissions and imperial edicts and orders. The plans set out the general principles of education that Catherine proposed to adopt with the aim of creating a newly educated class.The first part contains Le plan general de la Maison Imperiale d'Education fondee a Moscou. This private foundation dating from 1764 was under the direct control of the Empress and relied solely on private subscription. The second part is concerned with the work of other similar foundations in Russia and concludes with an essay Observations physiques sur I'education des enfans. The translator Nicolas Gabrielle Clerc 1726-98 was a member of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences and was involved in the reorganization of Russian charitable institutions. At the end of the book there is a short paragraph by Diderot in which he eulogizes the achievements of Betskoi p.157.Originally published in Russian at St Petersburg in 1774 this is the first French edition arranged by Diderot after his return from Russia during which he advised Catherine on educational matters. Her first husband was Thomas Ward Esq Consul General to Russia and it was through that marriage that she embarked upon her experiences in Russia and wrote the passages for this volume some forty years later. She was married twice more to Claudius Rondeau Esq. and to William Vigor Esq. whom she survived. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Vigor inherited her father's fortune after her brother died and she then married Ward. Both her first and second husband who was Ward's secretary were stationed in St. Petersburg which is where she lived throughout her first two marriages. She returned to England after her second husband's death: frail pregnant and accompanied by William Vigor a Quaker minister who became her third husband. <br /> <br /> These first "Letters from a Lady" were followed posthumously by "Eleven Additional Letters" which provided a biography of Vigor.<br /> <br /> Errata printed on verso of title page. Docketed on the reverse of the leaf: ‘May 2d 1810 / Lord St Helens / Authy to charge Agency at the rate of 1 P Ct on Monies recovered on accot of Land Tax refunded to Foreign Ministers &cr.’ Signed St Helens. The letter begins: ‘Having communicated with Lords Malmesbury and Auckland on the subject of the allowance to be made to you as agent for the Foreign Ministers in the business of the Land-Tax assessments which His Majesty has been graciously pleased to order to be refunded to them I have the honor to inform you that we agree in thinking that you ought to be allowed on that account the sum of One Per Cent on your payments to the retired Foreign Ministers where Pensions amount to Eight hundred Pounds per Annum and upwards.’ The rest of the letter authorizes Broughton to do so ‘as long as the business remains on it’s present footing’. The item has been torn away from a mount resulting in damage to the two outer corners with the area immediately to the right of the signature ‘St Helens’ lacking. The name of the recipient ‘Genl. Bentham Esqr &c &c &c’ has the word ‘Genl.’ heavily worn. Folded into a packet. Begins: ‘Give me leave my Dear Sir to introduce and recommend to you the Bearer of this Letter Mr. Vaxel a young Russian Literati who is going to England by order and I believe at the Expence of this Government in order to study Hydraulics. As he has been particularly recommended to me by the Vice-Chancellor and some other persons in high Office I could not avoid giving you this trouble being persuaded that nobody is more capable than yourself of pointing out to him the best method of presenting his studies to advantage’. In the rest of the letter he states that Vaxel is ‘a nephew of your late valuable Friend Coll. Itamalnoff’ with ‘Admiral Medvinoff’ as his ‘chief Patron’. He also gives Vaxel's titles.
