Orphelin, né sur l'île d’Elbe durant son annexion à l’Empire français , capturé enfant par des pirates barbaresques, il rejoint le sérail de Mahmoud Bey. Il apprit le turc, l'arabe, l'espagnol, montra son adresse dans les exercices militaires, fut admis dans le corps des Mamelouks, devint l'ami du Bey. Favorable à la cause française contre l’avis du Bey et à la suite d’une intrigue amoureuse, Il quitta Tunis pour rallier la flotte française à Alger, où il fut placé comme interprète militaire avant de faire valoir ses talents militaires en Algérie pendant la conquête puis lors de la guerre de Crimée.
