Scritta a partire dal 1900, questa epopea "naturalista" (con tratti talora simbolisti) gli ottenne il premio Nobel 1924 (con concorrenti come Thomas Mann, Maxim Gorky, Thomas Hardy e il polacco Stefan Zeromski!) e impressiona per l'adesione totale e non ideologica alla realtà - incluso il dialetto di Lipce sia nei dialoghi che nel corso della narrazione - costumi, comportamento (anche elementi erotici), vita religiosa, aggressivi ritratti, mentalità, "creando un linguaggio universale polacco" (wiki)..Non facile a trovarsi completa, l'opera in 4 voll.
