"As I listened to their stories I saw with searing vividness the similarity between what is happening in Poland today and what happened in Belgium 25 years ago; the similarity and the difference, which lies in the fact that the Germans today are even more brutal, more bestial than they were in 1914-1918. I decided to publish these stories, together with an essay comparing German conduct during the last war and during the present one, and showing that if they have changed at all it has been for the worse. Some of the stories are so horrible that they exhaust all ordinary human capacity for horror and indignation. However, some, at least, of the victims of German blood lust have escaped death. Feinstone (1878-1945),was born in Warsaw and trained as a woodcarver there. "After completing school he emigrated to England where he became president of a woodcarvers' union in London (1895). Later in Birmingham he was active in the beginnings of the British Labour Party. In 1910 Feinstone emigrated to the U.S. where he found employment in various skilled trades, securing permanent work in the umbrella industry. He soon became an official of the Umbrella Handle and Stick Makers' Union and an important figure in the United Hebrew Trades, an organization which sheltered the smaller and weaker American Jewish trade unions. Feinstone was a close associate of the organization's outstanding leader, Max Pine, whom he succeeded as United Hebrew Trades' secretary in 1928. Feinstone continued Pine's policy of supporting the socialist labor sector in Jewish Palestine through the Histadrut. He also represented the United Hebrew Trades on the executive board of the Central Trades and Labor Council of Greater New York, wrote articles in the New York Call and the Yiddish Jewish Daily Forward endorsing socialism and labor Zionism, and worked for the establishment of an independent labor party. With the advent of the New Deal, Feinstone's socialist teachings were incorporated by the American Labor Party, which satisfied his desire for a working class political organization. Incisione in acciaio (mm. 100 x 130 parte incisa + margini bianchi) di A. Bozza (1811-1838) su disegno di J. Ligber (proveniente dalla "Storia della Polonia..." di B. Zaydler, edita a Firenze nel 1831). Ritrae il letterato polacco Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758-1841): esponente del primo Romanticismo, fu fra i proponitori della Costituzione di Maggio (1791). Costretto a fuggire per motivi politici, si recò negli Stati Uniti, tornando in patria solo dopo il Congresso di Vienna, ma dopo un periodo con incarichi istituzionali fu di nuovo esiliato, e morì a Parigi.
