Il grande scrittore André Gide (1869-1951, Premio Nobel per la Letteratura nel 1947) tra i compositori privilegiò sempre Chopin sopra ogni altro, tanto che il musicista polacco assunse ai suoi occhi un valore quasi mitologico, ponendosi come una sorta di assoluto musicale. «Ho trascorso con Chopin un numero maggiore di ore che con qualsiasi altro autore», confidava Gide a un giovane pianista nel gennaio 1915; e in effetti Gide, pianista egli stesso, si misurò tutta la vita con Chopin, come testimoniano le sue numerose pagine, dai "Cahiers d'André Walter" alle opere della maturità, costellate di richiami musicali. Le sue "Note su Chopin", integrate in questa edizione dalle pagine del "Journal" che alla musica e a Chopin si richiamano, sono il distillato di questa frequentazione; Gide riteneva che la propria epoca stesse tradendo il vero Chopin con esecuzioni virtuosistiche che alla fine contrastavano con la sua più intima essenza; occorreva dunque tornare alle partiture, alle reali intenzioni e indicazioni del grande musicista. Un libro di grande intelligenza critica, a metà tra musica e letteratura (di grande interesse anche i confronti tra Chopin e Baudelaire), arricchito dall'acuta prefazione di Gianandrea Gavazzeni che è stato non solo uno dei nostri più grandi direttori d'orchestra, ma anche uno dei nostri massimi critici musicali.
