Konrad provides the first book-length commentary on Plutarch's Life of Sertorius the work that has shaped most modern interpretations of the man and his career. Quintus Sertorius 126-73 B. C. was a political and military leader during the period of turmoil that ended with the Roman Republic's disintegration just thirty years after his death. A major figure on the losing side in the first civil war 87-82 B. C. he went to Spain to continue the struggle against the ruling senatorial faction with the help of Roman exiles and the native population. His military skill was much admired but his increasingly despotic behavior combined with failing luck in the field eventually prompted Sertorius' assassination by his Roman staff. One of Plutarch's most austere biographies Sertoriuslacks the rich color and wealth of anecdote characteristic of his Antony or Perikles yet it is unsurpassed in its seemingly unbounded sympathy for its subject and is the most substantial source extant on Sertorius. By analyzing Plutarch's method and purpose Konrad develops a more critical and less eulogistic view of Sertorius' character and his actions during this period. The Greek text of Plutarch's biography is included in this book. . 080782139X . The University of North Carolina Press hardcover

Dustjacket and book have minor shelfwear and rubbing.; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 416 pages; Written by one of the foremost historians of the Roman Empire this collection of both new and previously published essays forms a colorful picture of daily life in the Mediterranean world between A.D. 50 and 450. Here for example the author applies statistical analysis to broad groups of people on matters ranging from justice through medicine to language. In so doing he is able to substantiate general statements about routines in ordinary people's behavior and to detect within these routines the very changes that constitute history. Such analysis also shows how this era benefits from the same historiographical approaches that have so successfully elucidated sociocultural phenomena in other periods. Drawing from statistical analysis and many other historical approaches these essays on popular mores in the Roman Empire cover such topics as language and art acculturation thought and religion sex and gender cruelty and slavery and aspects of class and power relations. The author introduces the collection with several essays on historical method as it pertains to the richness of documentation and variety to be found in the region and period chosen. . 0691036012 . 197743574Oxford University Press. 1977. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Pages a bit browned. Minor bumping to a couple of corners. DJ has minor edgewear and a bit of chipping.; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence — since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water — in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 722 pages . 0198148100 . 201016646Cambridge University Press. 2010. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Bumping to top of spine. DJ has some minor edgewear with some creasing along edges.; 270 pages; This book examines the connection between political and religious power in the pagan Roman Empire through a study of senatorial religion. Presenting a new collection of historical epigraphic prosopographic and material evidence it argues that as Augustus turned to religion to legitimize his powers senators in turn also came to negotiate their own power as well as that of the emperor partly in religious terms. In Rome the body of the senate and priesthoods helped to maintain the religious power of the senate; across the Empire senators defined their magisterial powers by following the model of emperors and by relying on the piety of sacrifice and benefactions. The ongoing participation and innovations of senators confirm the deep ability of imperial religion to engage the normative symbolic and imaginative aspects of religious life among senators. . 0521897246 .
