The pamphlet is a response to the Gorham judgment of 1850 by the Privy Council whereby an Anglican vicar with views that infant baptism did not give full regeneration of the soul was reinstated as the vicar of Brampford Speke in Essex. This resulted in major protestations by many high-level clergy. The pamphlet replies to one of those protestations by the author's Archdeacon.
