1993PS-50Boulder CO.: Westview Press 1993. In this scholarly biography Wayne Thompson brings to life six decades of German history by tracing the career of Herbert Wehner. One of Germany's most active and influential politicians. Wehner emerged in the 1920s as a Communist firebrand and rose in the 1950s to the top leadership of the ruling Social Democratic Party. He remained influential during the party's decline to the role of an opposition party in the 1980s. By the time of his death in 1990 Wehner had become a symbol of the twists and turns the highs and lows of not only German but also Soviet and East European history in the 20th century. Placing this figure in the context of this time Thompson provides insights into the nature of the SPD and the FRG's political system. 485 pgs. Frontispiece. Illustrated. Dustjacket in mylar. 200934625Cambridge University Press. 2009. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover Slater & Dunbabin. Faint shelfwear to book. Creasing and edgewear along upper edge of DJ.; In the first two centuries AD the eastern Roman provinces experienced a proliferation of elite public generosity unmatched in their previous or later history. In this study Arjan Zuiderhoek attempts to answer the question why this should have been so. Focusing on Roman Asia Minor he argues that the surge in elite public giving was not caused by the weak economic and financial position of the provincial cities as has often been maintained but by social and political developments and tensions within the Greek cities created by their integration into the Roman imperial system. As disparities of wealth and power within imperial polis society continued to widen the exchange of gifts for honours between elite and non-elite citizens proved an excellent political mechanism for deflecting social tensions away from open conflicts towards communal celebrations of shared citizenship and the legitimation of power in the cities.; Greek Culture In The Roman World; 9.1 X 6.0 X 0.7 inches; 206 pages . 0521519306 . 1955046078Prague: Statni Zidovske Muzeum 1955 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. Jewish monuments in Bohemia and Moravia series v.1 pt. 2. By Hana Volavkova with the cooperation of the members of the research staff of the State Jewish Museum in Prague. This report on the architectural restoration of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague is written to draw attention to the work being done for the creation of a memorial to the Seventy Seven Thousand Two Hundred and Ninety Seven; What form the memorial will take; and the architectural cultural historical associations. Tragedy overtook Europe's Jewish minority in the years 1938-1945. In Bohemia and Moravia alone 77297 Jewish men women and children perished. Their names with all the obtainable data of birth death and date of transport have been gathered and will be inscribed on the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue the shine now destined to their memory. The history of the Jews in Bohemia and Moravia begins in the 9th to 10th centuries and the oldest finds made of the Pinkas Synagogue date from that time. They throw light on the dim picture we have of medieval synagogues. English translation: by Greta Hort. 147p.maps diagrams 68 photographic plates.
